About us

The Department of Dermatology at the University Medical Center of Mainz has 45 beds on two wards for inpatient care of skin diseases and also offers a consultation hour in general dermatology as well as diverse specialized consultation hours in which patients are treated on an outpatient basis. Various functional areas offer modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

In addition to general skin diseases (such as eczema or psoriasis) a focus of clinical care is the treatment of allergies, chronic wounds and diseases of the veins. Our certified skin cancer center provides oncological care at the highest level. Additionally, there are special offerings available for patients with autoimmune diseases of the skin, occupational skin diseases, infectious diseases of the skin, urticaria (hives) and hereditary angioedema.
Surgery is performed by an experienced team of competent specialists and senior consultants. A division specialized for this very purpose at the Department of Dermatology focuses on cosmetic-esthetic medicine to improve the appearance of the skin and to remove cosmetically disturbing skin manifestations, also by using modern procedures of laser therapy.

In direct collaboration with the research laboratories, we are developing new forms of treatment at our clinical study center for patients with the most diverse skin diseases (psoriasis, skin tumors, eczema, etc.).

Diagnostic Services

• Microscopic tissue examinations of the skin (histology, immunohistology, molecular pathology)
• Ultrasound of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and lymph nodes
• Various types of allergy tests (prick test, intracutaneous test, native food test, epicutaneous test, etc.) as well as special diagnostics for urticaria, mastocytosis and angioedema
• Examination of moles by means of computer-assisted video microscopy
• Testing for special light sensitivity and sun allergy
• Examination of venous function in the legs (duplex ultrasound)
• As well as the entire spectrum of diagnostic services available at the University Hospital
