About us
The Neurosurgical Clinic rechts der Isar (on the right hand side of the river Isar) of the Munich Technical University has been under new leadership since March 2006 (Medical Director: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Bernhard Meyer) and since March 2007 has formed part of the newly established and built Neuro- Kopfzentrum (Neuro Head Center).
As a result of these recent changes and the merging of the main neurological specialist sections, the service provided by the range of participating clinics, and thereby of neuro-surgery, has changed considerably. The number of the outpatients and in-patients treated has risen dramatically and the clinical surgical focuses have been clearly expanded.
The medical and medicaltechnical team in neuro-surgery has a fresh and modern structure and its primary aim is to be a partner to the patient, in order to provide, as far as possible, holistic and patient centered treatment.
A successful group works in the area of neuro-oncology, together with the Neurological, Oncological and Radio Therapeutic Clinic, in order to achieve holistic and optimized care for patient with gliomas and metastases. A "brain tumors" tumor board meets every week in order to co-ordinate the treatment of every single patient. Operations on brain tumors (gliomas andmetastasis) and tumors of the base of the skull (acoustic neurinomas, meningiomas, and chordomas) are carried out in the Neurosurgical Clinic.
In this respect, among other things, the purely endoscopic transnasal operation has been established as a new surgical method to deal with a large number of different tumors.
In very close co-operation with interventional neuro radiology, the concentration on neuro vascular treatment has developed into a unit of leading-edge treatment for aneurysms and all other vascular diseases of the brain. Spinal column surgery covers all levels from minimally invasive therapies (e.g. kyphoplasties) and techniques to preserve movement (e.g. prosthetic intervertebral disc replacement) to resource-intensive, reconstructive, surgery with instruments. We concentrate also on the important subject of functional neuro surgery, and in this context, in particular, on deep brain stimulation for movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, in collaboration with the Neurological Clinic.
