About us
The Department of Radio-Oncology and Radiation Therapy of Heidelberg University Hospital is one of the most modern and largest institutions in the world.
In 2006, it was able to look back on a 100 year history.
In addition to the clinical care of our patients and our close co-operation with nearby clinics, we place as much value on the basic research in collaboration with the Heidelberg German Cancer Research
Center (DKFZ).
Every year, more than 3,500 patients, both in outpatients and staying in hospital, are currently looked after by 41 medical staff.
Our three bed wards form the basis of optimum patient care in hospital, with a total of 62 beds and our specialized nursing staff.
Several chemotherapy/combined radio-chemotherapy treatments, and also radioimmunotherapy are carried on our wards by administration of modern antibody therapies.
The clinic has six linear accelerators including an intraoperative radiation apparatus in the University surgical clinic as well as a helical tomotherapy unit.
In addition, the whole range of brachytherapy is provided. Also, the clinical co-operation unit at the Heidelberg German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is included in our clinic.
New radiation techniques are developed here and finally implemented
in the clinical routine, and basic research is carried out too.
Furthermore, we are part of the "Comprehensive Cancer Center", unique in Germany, in the form of the Heidelberg National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT). Optimal care/treatment of tumor patients can be guaranteed by regular interdisciplinary tumor boards. Particle therapy with protons and carbon ions is performed at the Heidelberg Ion Therapy Center (HIT).
