About us Prof. Christoph Schöbel

As the West German Lung Centre the Ruhrlandklinik is one of the leading hospitals for surgical, instrument-based and drug treatment of all respiratory organ disease. Being part of the Universitätsmedizin Essen the Ruhrlandklinik’s specialists cooperate on an interdisciplinary basis with many other specialists and specialist centres of the Universitätsklinikum Essen, in addition to national and international experts.

Prof. Schöbel is considered to be one of the pioneers of sleep medicine at home and abroad and he has made a marked contribution to developing this special discipline, innovating in the area of instrument-based ventilation technology, his many clinical studies, and almost 200 published papers in specialist literature. He and his team at the Medical Sleep Centre of the Ruhrlandklinik are therefore highly-specialized in the diagnostics and therapy of disrupted sleep and wide-ranging sleep-related respiratory disorders. The Medical Sleep Centre has all diagnostic and therapeutic methods available for identifying sleep-related disease and to allow treatment of disorders or symptoms. Key foci are on obstructive and central sleep apnoea, i.e. sleep disorders, which are caused by breathing stops, as well as other sleep problems, usually attributable to neurological causes.

The sleep experts at Ruhrlandklinik also treat patients with problems in falling asleep or sleeping through the night, movement disorders and disease with excessive daytime sleepiness and -fatigue. An interdisciplinary expert team from the specialist areas of internal medicine, pneumology, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, radiology, dentistry etc. work in close collaboration at the Medical Sleep Centre of the Ruhrlandklinik. Sleep is investigated either on an inpatient or outpatient basis. For outpatient sleep investigation the patient takes home a device which is able to record various aspects of disrupted breathing or of movement disorders during sleep. Prof. Schöbel or a colleague evaluate the recordings and decide whether any in-patient investigation is required at the Medical Sleep Centre. For inpatient examination special sleep rooms - all single-bed rooms - are available for the patients allowing the latest technology for investigating and treating the whole range of sleep and sleep breathing disorders.

The German Sleep Society (DGSM) has certified the sleep lab at the Ruhrlandklinik for its outstanding services. For patients this means reliable, optimum treatment competence and then more life quality due to better sleep. Besides running the Medical Sleep Centre, Prof. Schöbel also works at the Outpatient Lung Centre in Essen, a key cooperative partner of the Ruhrlandklinik.
