Prof. Dr. Ulrich Costabel, longtime head of the department, is an internationally renowned pulmonologist and researcher at the West German Lung Center whose advice regarding rare pulmonary diseases is sought worldwide. In close cooperation with the self-help organization “Deutsche Sarkoidose-Vereinigung” (German Sarcoidosis Association), the German Sarcoidosis Center is integrated into the department. Here, not only the involvement of the lungs in sarcoidosis is diagnosed, treated and medically checked, but all organ involvements in sarcoidosis. One of the major treatment areas of the department is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. In this area, the Ruhrland Hospital is notably prominent concerning therapeutical studies. The department is also widely renowned in the field of rare pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (abnormal accumulation of protein within the alveoli). One third of the 200 Germans suffering from this medical condition are being treated here by administration of vital pulmonary lavages.
Our department is also equipped with an allergy laboratory, a clinical chemical and immunological laboratory, as well as a laboratory for bronchoalveolar lavage. One of the largest of its kind in Germany, the latter is processing more than 2,000 samples from all over Germany per year.
A specialized consultation hour for patients with interstitial lung diseases is available which is also targeted at sarcoidosis patients.
