Prof. Rainer Wessely is a specialist in internal medicine, cardiology, angiology and special non-surgical intensive care medicine with many years of experience as the Senior Consultant for Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Angiology. Since 2013, Prof. Wessely has been head of the Cardiac and Vascular Medical Centre founded by him in the Mediapark in Cologne, which specialises in the integrated and comprehensive care of patients with thoracic (heart and lung) and vascular conditions. At the same time, the range of medical services of Prof. Wessely and his team includes both diagnostics and the treatment and the prevention of cardiac, vascular and circulatory disorders.
Asst Lect. Dr Christoph Hammerstingl has been a partner in the practice 2016 and brings with him many years of university experience in the field of cardiology, particularly also in the field of cardiac imaging, coronary angioplasty and minimally invasive valve treatment.
All established non-invasive and invasive procedures for diagnosis and treatment in the field of internal medicine and cardiology and angiology are at the disposal of Prof. Wessely and Dr Hammerstingl at the Cologne Cardiac and Vascular Medical Centre. These range from so-called conservative therapy to interventional treatment techniques and to surgical therapeutic options in collaboration with the University of Cologne. The objective of the Cardiac and Vascular Medical Centre is to provide all these procedures from a single source and at the highest medical and human standard. As a result, in collaboration with the Eduardus Hospital in Cologne, the leading practice doctors founded CIKA (the Centre for Integrative Cardiology and Angiology), where cardiac and vascular patients can be cared for holistically in accordance with the latest insights by means of invasive and conservative techniques, as out-patients and as in-patients.
Within the context of conservative therapy, Prof. Wessely and Asst Lect. Dr Hammerstingl primarily employ specific medications to reduce the factors triggering cardiovascular disorders. In interventional treatment, catheter-assisted techniques are utilised to repair the coronary vessels, the cardiac valves or the cardiac muscle. These are performed by the doctors of the centre for cardiac, vascular and pulmonary medicine in co-operation with a nearby collaborating hospital, which has the most advanced medical facilities at its disposal. Surgical treatments can also be performed in co-operation with collaborating, prestigious hospitals.
Together with interventional cardiology, interventional angiology and internistic intensive care medicine, Prof. Wessely’s specialisations include, in particular, the treatment of cardiac insufficiency. In the field of interventional cardiac and vascular medicine, Prof. Wessely specialises in, inter alia, the treatment of constriction or total occlusion of the coronary arteries. Thanks to his clinical expertise, Prof. Wessely has already received several awards, including the Oskar Lapp Prize of the German Cardiology Association, the Poster Prize of the German Internal Medicine Association and an award by the American Heart Association.
Asst Lect. Dr Hammerstingl is an internationally renowned specialist in the field of the minimally invasive treatment of cardiac valve disorders. Thanks to his scientific work, he has helped to establish this advanced treatment as the therapeutic standard in invasive cardiology. A further specialisation of Asst Lect. Dr Hammerstingl is the use of advanced imaging techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disorders.
