About us

Asst Lect. Dr Ralf Kraus is the Senior Consultant at the Accident Surgery, Orthopaedics, Spinal and Paediatric Traumatology Clinic and the Medical Director at the Asklepios Hospital, Lich. Together with his team of specialists, Asst Lect. Dr Kraus treats all conditions and injuries to the musculoskeletal system. He possesses particular expertise in the field of orthopaedic surgery for the endoprosthetic replacement of all large joints.

The Asklepios Hospital Lich is the first centre in Middle Hesse to be certified as an EndoProsthetics Centre by the German Association of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC). Thanks to this quality assurance scheme, the high standard of endoprosthetics care at the Accident Surgery, Orthopaedics, Spinal and Paediatric Traumatology Clinic is documented.

Patients with degenerative (wear-associated) joint conditions (osteoarthritis) are cared for at the highest medical standard. Only if conservative techniques or joint-preserving surgery is inadequate for reducing the pain or to restore movement, is an artificial joint replacement considered. The patient himself will decide when. The implants are individually selected in accordance with the most up-to-date scientific and technical techniques and are discussed in detail with the patient concerned.

Thanks to the defined treatment pathways in the field of endoprosthetics, all procedures are clearly structured for the patient, trouble-free progress is guaranteed and the treatment quality is standardised. All prostheses are planned exactly using an electronic system and a “blueprint” is created for the procedure. In the field of hip surgery, Asst Lect. Dr Kraus and his team of specialists at the Asklepios Hospital, Lich rely on surgical techniques in which the artificial hip joint is individually applied with or without cement. Here, he uses high-quality glide surfaces.

For younger patients and those who have good bone substance, Asst Lect. Dr Kraus implants short-shaft prostheses, which largely spare the healthy bone. If the knee joint is affected by osteoarthritis, knee joint endoprostheses are implanted. Here, too, the planning is customised: for severe signs of joint wear, the entire surface is replaced with a surface prosthesis, in less severe cases, only a section of the knee joint can be replaced using a sled prosthesis. For unstable knee joints and gross malpositioning, linked prostheses are inserted. Infected prostheses are also treated, together with loose prostheses in Asst Lect. Dr Kraus’s department.

The team of specialists under Asst Lect. Dr Kraus has many years experience in the complex field of replacement surgery. If an infected endoprostheses must be removed, it is replaced with a place-holder made from cement infused with an antibiotic until the site is healed. Generally, the most advanced special prostheses are then inserted, which consist of several individually assembled (modular) parts.

Not just hip and knee joints are operated on at the Asklepios Hospital, Lich, but shoulder and elbow joints, which have been damaged by osteoarthritis or accident, can also be replaced with artificial joints and thus, their movement can be restored. Here, Asst Lect. Dr Kraus uses a unique prosthesis system in the shoulder, which can be implanted as a trauma prosthesis for comminuted fractures of the humeral head, as in inverse endoprostheses for damage to the rotator cuff and as an anatomical prosthesis for osteoarthritis. In most cases, Asst Lect. Dr Kraus and his team of specialists at the Asklepios Hospital, Lich succeed in restoring the patients’ freedom from pain following surgery, as well as their ability to move and weight bear and so to recover their quality of life.

Close networking with out-patient and in-patient rehabilitation centres in the vicinity also ensures therapeutic success for the patients after their hospital stay. Integrated into the Middle Hesse trauma network, traumatology, that is, the care of patients injured due to accidents, represents a further focus of Asst Lect. Dr Kraus’s department. Asst Lect. Dr Kraus has particular expertise in the field of the treatment of paediatric traumatology. Thus, young patients, as well as the youngest patients, are also given highly qualified treatment for their bony fractures and their sequelae.
