Both in the out-patient area and in the in-patient area, the Hernia Centre covers the entire range of hernia surgery in Hamburg.
A hernia is a type of point of rupture, frequently in the abdominal wall, through which fluid or even an organ (e.g. a loop of intestine) may protrude. There is then the risk that the protruding organ may be trapped and become necrotic. Ideally, the contents of the rupture can be pressed back through the hernia. Frequently, however, a surgical procedure is required. In the process, the experts ensure that patients with an inguinal or another hernia are invariably treated in accordance with the current recommendations of the medical guidelines. Depending on the degree of severity of the condition, either open surgical techniques or minimally invasive techniques are utilised in hernia surgery, whereby, the keyhole technique is preferred whenever possible. Using this minimally invasive surgery, gentle for the patients, the specialists in hernia surgery achieve a reduction in the duration of the hospital stay and the patients have less pain and hence are more rapidly able to return to their normal daily routine. At the Hernia Centre, a hernia is also treated with the aid of a mesh, where required, in order to seal the site of the rupture more effectively.
In selecting the treatment method, the physicians take not only the degree of severity and the type of hernia into consideration, but also address the patient’s general health situation and the particular desires of the patient. The high quality of the care of patients with hernias has already been confirmed by the seal of “Quality-assured Hernia Surgery”, awarded by the German Hernia Association (DHG). The Department also participates in the nation-wide “Herniamed” quality assurance study. Hence, the quality standards in hernia surgery in Hamburg are continuously enhanced.
