Prof. Jan Gralla a specialist in Neuroradiology, Senior Consultant and Director of the Institute at the University Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at the Inselspital of the University Hospital, Berne. Prof. Gralla is a specialist radiologists focusing on “diagnostic neuroradiology”, “invasive neuroradiology” and “invasive pain therapy”. He heads a large team of leading doctors, consultants, registrars, radiographers, nurses, as well as physicists and computer scientists.
The University Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at the Inselspital, Berne specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the brain, neck and spinal cord using neuroradiological techniques.
The focus is the minimally invasive treatment of vascular conditions of the brain, neck and back. Here, under the direction of the specialist in Neuroradiology, Prof. Gralla, the Institute utilises computer tomography (CT), magnetic resonance tomography (MRT), angiography and digital volume tomography (DVT). An NIRS-EEG system (imaging technique for measuring brain activity), which combines the near-infrared spectroscopy technique with an EEG (electroencephalogram), is also available to the team of neuroradiology specialists for further investigations. The diagnostic range also includes functional magnetic resonance imaging in combination with EEG for the detection of the smallest lesions in patients with epilepsy. The diagnostic emphases are enhanced epilepsy diagnosis, volumetric progression evaluation for cerebral tumours, degenerative cerebral conditions and multiple sclerosis and the neuroradiological assessment of childhood conditions.
Prof. Gralla’s special treatment emphasis is the minimally invasive treatment of complex aneurysms of the cerebral arteries, vascular malformations (venous angiomata, AVM and fistulas) of the brain, face, neck and spinal column, as well as the embolisation of tumours.
There is intense collaboration and interdisciplinary treatment of the patients together with the vascular specialists of the neighbouring departments (Prof. C. Bassetti –neurology, Prof. A. Raabe – neurosurgery, Prof. D. Aebersold – radio-oncology) within the large vascular centre of the Inselspital. As well, the team specialises in detecting lesions in CSF volume loss syndromes (hypoliquorrhoea) and, together with targeted diagnosis where a condition is suspected, also offers minimal invasive treatment.
All up to date techniques and instruments for neuroradiological diagnosis and treatment are at hand (MRT, 128-line CT, biplanar angiography, myelography)
Multimodal imaging of the brain, neck and spinal column by means of functional imaging, nerve fibre imaging (tractography) and spectroscopy
Precise MRT measurement (volumetry) for evaluating the progression of e.g. multiple sclerosis, tumours or dementias
Multimodal investigation for epilepsy for detecting the focus
Multimodal investigation and treatment of hypoliquorrhoea syndromes
Minimally invasive treatment of aneurysms by means of coiling and remodelling techniques and flow diverter. For complex aneurysms, the treatment is interdisciplinary in collaboration with the hospital’s Neurosurgery Department
Minimally invasive treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and dural AV fistulas (DAVF), when required, interdisciplinary in collaboration with the hospital’s Neurosurgery and Radiotherapy Departments
Targeted investigation of CSF volume loss syndromes (hypoliquorrhoea syndrome) by means of contrast-enhanced MRT and dynamic myelography for detecting the leakage site and for minimally invasive treatment
Minimally invasive sclerotisation (embolisation) of tumours and vascular abnormalities (venous angiomata) of the head and neck region by means of catheter techniques and direct puncture
