About us

Asst Lect. Dr Karl F. Kothbauer is a specialists neurosurgeon at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital. Here, he is the Senior Consultant and Head of the Neurosurgery Clinic. He specialises in both general and in paediatric neurosurgery.

The particular treatment emphases of Dr Kothbauer include principally surgery for intramedullary tumours of the spinal cord, endoscopic procedures on the brain (neuroendoscopy), intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and surgery for cerebral tumours in children and adults. The combination of these emphases with the excellent technical and personal facilities of the clinic facilitates the optimum patient care. In the process, conditions across the range of neurosurgery are treated at the Neurosurgery Clinic of the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital: all types of cerebral tumours, pituitary tumours, cerebral haemorrhage and cerebral vascular accident, intracranial injury, hydrocephalus, chronic pain, as well as degenerative conditions of the spinal column.

The symptoms of hydrocephalus and certain types of cerebral tumours can be treated by means of neuroendoscopy, the neurosurgical version of keyhole surgery. Neuroendoscopy requires a great deal of precision and meticulous preparation. Dr Kothbauer can draw on years of specialist experience in this field.

The Neurosurgery Clinic at the LUKS places particular emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration in the area of spinal conditions. For this reason, an “Interdisciplinary Spinal Centre” was founded under the leadership of Dr Martin Baur. Here, specialists in orthopaedics and accident surgery also work side by side with neurosurgeons. This area is responsible for the care of all types of spinal injury and degenerative conditions of the spine.

Hence, practically all complex injuries and conditions of the spine can be treated optimally.

Dr Kothbauer himself completed his medical studies at the University of Vienna before he came to Switzerland in 1990. In 1996, he went to the USA to continue his training in the field of neurophysiology and paediatric neurosurgery. The specialist neurosurgeon has been Head of Neurosurgery in Lucerne since 2004.

His advanced expertise is surgery on and within the spinal cord, for tumours, developmental disorders and cysts, as well as neurosurgical oncology (cerebral tumours) and the application of intraoperative neurophysiological methods for functional control during surgery.
