About us

Insel Hospital is the main hospital of the German and French speaking Canton of Bern with its patients coming from far beyond the cantonal borders.

At the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) a team of highly qualified physicians and staff members from nursing care, medical technology, speech therapy and psychology ensures your optimal care. We offer competent medical care in the entire field of otorhinolaryngology. As a result of integrating the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) at the University of Bern, you can expect to receive treatment that is of the newest scientific standard. You and your family members should feel that you are in good hands in our department; we would like to provide you with an "island" during the time of your illness.

Our special areas of expertise are computer-assisted endoscopic surgery of the nose and the paranasal sinuses. This minimally invasive technique makes it possible to avoid skin incisions in the face and the scalp. We maintain interdisciplinary contacts with the departments of maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery and ophthalmology.
Insel Hospital Bern is one of the Swiss clinics with the greatest experience in cochlear implantation. We have just recently performed cochlear implantation number 500 in our department. Modern otological microsurgery in many cases makes it possible to improve hearing by closing eardrum defects and restoring the ossicular chain. We closely collaborate with the Center for Artificial Organs and we have together been able to develop implantable hearing systems that already have been successfully used.

The diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors in the area of the head and neck in addition to the usual surgical methods also include laser surgery and reconstruction by means of microvascular flap grafts. The interdisciplinary tumor board composed of ENT surgeons, radiooncologists, medical oncologists and radiologists individually evaluates the cases and develops an optimal therapy for you. Whenever possible we attempt to operate in a minimally invasive and organ-preserving manner.

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) at Insel Hospital and I personally would feel honored to welcome you as a patient in our department.

Therapeutic Services

Our department has three operating rooms renovated in 2011 with equipment that is state-of-the-art. The new OR1 Multimedia Facility via the "surgical cockpit" makes it possible to directly view a live video broadcast of the surgeries being performed. This especially facilitates the mutual evaluation of minimally invasive endoscopic operations in an interdisciplinary team, thus, making it possible to individually optimize the surgical procedure. New is also the UltraPulse Laser which provides an especially protective surgical technique. Many operations also can be performed on an outpatient basis.
