About us

The Hospital for Pediatrics III cares for a large number of patients in the metropolitan Ruhr area in addition to some children from throughout Germany. As a university center, the Hospital works tirelessly to bring the latest research findings to the bedside as quickly as possible. This successful and patient-oriented research is conducted at the affiliated German Pediatric Research Center of the Ruhr (DKFR).

The Hematology/Oncology Department is among the five largest departments of this kind in Germany and specializes in the treatment of neuroblastoma, brain tumors, retinoblastoma (National Reference Center) and leukemia. The team is also highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of rare malignant diseases and patients with a complex clinical presentation. We participate as a trial center in all therapeutic studies conducted by the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH). Allogenic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) takes place in an interdisciplinary ward in collaboration with the BMT Hospital, the largest stem cell transplantation center in Europe.
Everyone benefits from the experience of the specialists of all disciplines who work under the auspices of theWest German Tumor Center. This is a top-notch oncological center, treating the largest number of cancer patients in Germany, which is honored by the German Cancer Society.

The Department of Pediatric Pulmonology treats children with severe chronic diseases of the respiratory tract. The Competence Center for Sleep and Ventilation Medicine is one of the leading European hospitals experienced in caring for patients on long-term ventilation. Patients of all age groups with cystic fibrosis (CF) are cared for by an experienced team through and including lung transplantation.
Research focuses on the mechanisms of chronic respiratory failure, new methods in pulmonary function testing and new treatments for CF.

In close collaboration with the West German Heart Center Essen and the German Children's Heart Center St. Augustin, the Department of Pediatric Cardiology offers all procedures for treating congenital or acquired heart defects.

The Competence Center for Rheumatology leads the German register for clinical studies in autoinflammatory diseases. All rheumatic diseases are treated.
