Prof. Anton Sculean has been the Director of the Department of Periodontology for around ten years. In 1999, he had already been recognised as a specialist in periodontology and headed the dental departments of several renowned clinics in Germany and the Netherlands. Overall, he has two decades of specialist medical experience as a periodontologist. As a member of various specialist associations, he is also in transnational dialogue with other specialists.
In addition, he has given over 200 lectures at specialist symposia and has actively contributed to scientific discourse as the author and co-author of around 160 articles in publications to date. In this manner, he has earnt an outstanding national and international reputation as a specialist in periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic-aesthetic (also minimally invasive) periodontal therapy, laser application and oral biofilms.
The Department of Periodontology is part of the Dental Clinics of the University of Berne. The two pillars of this centre are, on the one hand, the patients’ outstanding treatment and the excellent training of the prospective dental surgeons, on the other. The Department’s team, therefore, collaborates closely with advanced students. In this manner, the prospective doctors are given the opportunity to use their specialist knowledge under the supervision of experienced specialists. Likewise, the continual exchange between training, research and practice enables diagnosis and treatment in accordance with the most advanced state of the art.
A periodontology examination is necessary where there is frequent gingival bleeding, teeth which are more movable than normal or exposed dental cervices. Left untreated, gingival conditions can lead to the loss of a tooth. Competent advice is given in the Department of Periodontology following a thorough examination. In the process, the attending physician also will give you advice for modifying oral hygiene and will explain the risk factors for conditions of the gums. If treatment is required, discuss this directly with the specialist. The range of services of the Department includes the treatment and long-term care of all forms of gingival conditions, including the implantation of dental prostheses.
The Dental Clinics of the University of Berne place great value on a pleasant atmosphere, in which patients, specialists and up-and-coming medical practitioners work together on an equal footing. The Clinics would like their patients to feel that they are in good hands in treatment rooms, with their state-of-the-art equipment. But not only that: confident collaboration already begins, in particular, with the welcome on your first arrival.
