About us

The Hospital for Spinal- and Neurosurgery in Hamburg provides all the established  treatment techniques for spinal conditions. Dr. Hanz Peter Köhler is chiefly specialised in herniated discs, spinal canal stenoses, kinky back/spondylolisthesis and vertebral fractures.

Work within the team of specialists led by Dr. Hans-Peter Köhler, Hamburg is multi-disciplinary in nature. The team consists of specialists from different disciplines: pain therapy, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, spinal surgery and osteology. The common declared objective of all the doctors at the hospital is to be able to relieve your pain as fast as possible through this interdisciplinary expertise and the hospital's modern facilities. In all cases: conservative forms of therapy take precedence over surgery.

The conservative techniques of spinal surgery in Hamburg include pain therapy, physiotherapy and medical training therapy (MTT). Dr. Köhler will only recommend you surgery if none of these treatment measures is really bringing about an improvement or if your symptoms are just too strong.

Dr. Köhler mainly operates using minimally invasive, microsurgical techniques, i.e. with a surgical microscope or a spinal endoscope. Furthermore in spinal stabilisation surgery using neuronavigation, computer-aided three-dimensional imaging for the doctor's 3D view during the operation. State-of-the-art technology reduces the loss of blood during surgery and means less pain afterwards. This also enables the patient's recovery and mobilization to take place more swiftly.

If you should require surgery for a herniated disc in the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine, you are in the best hands with Dr. Köhler. The hospital has been certified by the German Spinal Association and offers microsurgical and also uniquely in Hamburg endoscopic techniques for herniated discs. During a microsurgical procedure a cut approx. 2cm in length is made using a surgical microscope to eliminate the consequences of the herniated disc. Surgery on vertebral fractures resulting from osteoporosis. In advanced osteoporosis bones soften and become more brittle. Then often a minor fall is enough, to break, for example, vertebral bodies. Dr. Köhler and his spinal surgery team can then choose from two minimally invasive surgical techniques, kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty.
