Dr Thomas Wissmeyer is a specialist surgeon and a specialist in orthopaedics and accident surgery with additional qualifications in special accident surgery. As the Senior Consultant, he heads the Department of Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery at the Asklepios Hospital, Lindau, which, in 2013, was the first hospital in the region, under the name ENDO-Lindau-Bodensee, to be officially certified as an Endoprosthetics Centre. Thanks to the most up-to-date medical facilities, optimised surgical techniques and the years of experience of the surgeons, the Endoprosthetics Centre at the Asklepios Hospital, Lindau, can provide its patients with a high level of safety and quality in the implantation of artificial joints.
The emphases of the ENDO-Lindau-Bodensee include, above all, hip prosthetics and knee prosthetics. So, under the leadership of the Senior Consultant, Dr Wissmeyer, over 150 hip prostheses and around 150 knee prostheses are implanted each year, and over 60 hip and knee prostheses are replaced. The most varied types of prostheses and surgical techniques are employed here, from partial prostheses to total joint replacement (hip TEP, knee TEP), from cemented to uncemented prosthesis fixation and from conventional open procedures to minimally invasive surgical techniques. As well as endoprosthetics for hips and knees, the range of services at the certified Endoprosthetics Centre at the Asklepios Hospital, Lindau also includes the implantation of artificial shoulder joints.
As one of the senior surgeons at the ENDO-Lindau-Bodensee, above all, Dr Wissmeyer has a high level of experience and expertise in the field of endoprosthetics. One of his emphases is minimally invasive hip endoprosthetics using the so-called AMIS technique – Dr Wissmeyer has already performed more than 1000 procedures using this technique. For the initial implantation, as well as for the replacement of artificial knee joint prostheses, Dr Wissmeyer and his team also utilise so-called computer navigation on principle, in order thus to improve the mobility and durability of the implanted knee prostheses.
Further emphases of the Department of Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery at the Asklepios Hospital, Lindau, are traumatology of the elderly, i.e. the care of older patients following a fall injury or other accidents, arthroscopy (joint endoscopy) of the hip, shoulder, elbow and ankle, foot surgery for malalignments such as hallux valgus, the treatment of joint cartilage damage and treatment for accidents at work and school.
