About us

Prof. Gero Puhl is the Senior Consultant of the Department of General, Abdominal and Vascular Surgery at the Asklepios Hospital, Altona in Hamburg. Prof. G. Puhl is an internationally recognised specialist, in particular, in the field of the surgical removal of hepatic and pancreatic tumours, as well as having extensive specialist surgical expertise in surgical procedures for oesophageal, gastric and intestinal tumours. He was named as the University Professor for Special Abdominal Surgery on the Liver, Biliary Tract and Pancreas during his employment at the Berlin Charité.

The broad spectrum of the surgical department he heads at the Asklepios Hospital, Altona also covers the entire field of general surgery. Here, the focus is on the area of the treatment of abdominal wall hernias, reflux disorder, rectal conditions and endocrine surgery. He collaborates closely here with the leading endocrine surgeon, Maria Buehrle.

Whenever possible, Prof. Puhl and his specialist team rely on minimally invasive techniques for all surgical procedures: here, instruments and a high-definition camera are introduced into the abdominal cavity via minuscule incisions. Thanks to a marked reduction in the superficial wound area, this technique results in reduced post-surgical pain and an accelerated recovery. It is crucial, however, that the same surgical ruthlessness in respect of the condition is ensured using this technique. Together with the classic minimally invasive keyhole surgery, Prof. Puhl is also trained in abdominal surgery using the advanced Xi robot system.

The interdisciplinary GastroClinic was founded under Prof. Puhl, together with Prof. Pohl, the Head of Gastroenterology. This is a centre within the Asklepios Hospital, Altona, which specialises in abdominal medicine. Here, experienced surgeons and physicians collaborate closely in one ward in order to give patients the optimal care, both in an in-patient and in an out-patient setting, using the techniques and the various experience of both specialist areas.

Precise diagnoses are made on the the basis of the examinations and the expertise of both teams, and optimal treatment plans, adjusted to the individual situation of the patient, are compiled in joint clinical case conferences. The patients benefit both from this immediate exchange of information and from the application of the most advanced respective treatment techniques. Thus, the ultramodern facilities of the hospital and the pooling of the competencies of two specialist areas facilitate the provision of outstanding and innovative treatment.
