Gynecology addresses the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the female sex and reproductive organs. These organs consist of the internal sex organs, meaning the vagina, the uterus, the fallopian tubes and the ovaries, as well as the external sex organs, meaning the vulva.

Among the most commonly treated diseases in women are uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis. Furthermore, disorders afflicting the female breast, especially breast cancer, are also diagnosed and treated by experts in gynecology.

Diagnostic services in gynecology

The diagnostic services offered in gynecology comprise the different diagnostic procedures and screening exams. Among there, for example, are the hysteroscopy, ultrasound exams of the uterus, the fallopian tubes and the ovaries, hormone tests and prematernity medical care. The most important procedures in breast cancer diagnostics and screening is the mammography.

For the treatment of diseases of the uterus, the fallopian tubes and the ovaries as well as the female breast, both conservative and surgical treatment methods are available. Common surgical procedures in gynecology are the removal of the uterus (hysterectomy), the myomectomy, the excision of ovarian cysts, breast cancer surgery and breast reconstruction.

Conservative, non-surgical treatment methods are, for example, hormone therapy, radiation therapy and chemotherapy in cases of breast cancer.

An additional clinical focus in gynecology is reproductive medicine which is used in infertility and the desire to have children. It attends to the different methods of artificial insemination.
