Urology attends to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the male sex organs and the male and female urinary organs. The male sex organs comprise the testicles, the epidymis, the seminal ducts, the seminal gland, the penis and the prostate.

Diseases of the male sex organs and the prostate

Among the most commonly treated diseases affecting the male sex organs are erectile dysfunctions, benign prostatic hyperplasia and cancers such as testicular cancer and prostatic cancer.
Prostatic cancer is the most common cancer in men.

Common diseases affecting the urinary organs are, e.g. urinary tract infections, kidney and bladder stones, bladder cancer, incontinence and weak bladder. For the prevention and diagnosis of urological diseases affecting the male genitourinary tract and the female urinary organs, there are different screening and diagnostic methods available. Among them are, e.g. cystoscopy, prostate biopsy, ultrasound and x-ray of the sex and urinary organs.

The therapeutic spectrum in urology comprises conservative as was as surgical treatment modalities. Common surgical interventions are, e.g. prostatectomy, say the removal of the prostate, or the transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
