Treatment of thrombosis, phlegmasia, pelvic vein spur
The University Vascular Centre of the University Hospital of the University of Dresden is divided into three divisions (Angiology, Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology). Prof. Norbert Weiss has been the Director of the Centre, as well as Head of the Angiology Division for around a decade. After he completed his specialist training in internal medicine, he specialised in angiology; all told, he has been intensely involved in this specialist internal medical field for over 20 years.
As a discipline, vascular medicine, which is concerned with medical conditions of all arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels, is very closely linked with all other specialist disciplines in human medicine. Specialists in angiology and vascular surgery, therefore, invariably need specialist knowledge of the related disciplines in order to diagnose vascular conditions correctly and to determine the right treatment.
Prof. Weiss pursues this holistic approach himself and also communicates this to up-and-coming medical practitioners. He is a regular member of several specialist associations and is involved as a Special Member of the Board of the German Angiology Association. Here, as a member of the Training and Advanced Committee, he is also responsible for the consistent high quality of teaching in the field of angiology.
But Prof. Weiss is not just involved in practice and teaching; he is also active in research. For example, he spent several years in research at the Whitacker Cardiovascular Institute in Boston, USA. He has also published numerous contributions in national and international specialist publications. Interdisciplinary research and teaching is an important pillar of the University Vascular Centre.
The quality of the treatment by the specialists of the Centre is also of great importance. This is shown by the certification of the Clinic as an Interdisciplinary Vascular Centre by several specialist associations. The most important working tool here is the interdisciplinary vascular conference. Here, each day, the medical practitioners of all disciplines involved discuss the cases, for which a vascular procedure is considered. The results are recorded in writing and are binding for the further treatment approach. Hence, it is consistently guaranteed that the individual patient will benefit from the experience of all the specialists.
The University Vascular Centre is located at the internistic-orientated Medical Clinic and Polyclinic III, which is headed by Prof. Bornstein. Prof. Bornstein enjoys an internationally outstanding expertise among his colleagues and supports the interdisciplinary collaboration of all departments at the Clinic.
