The Interdisciplinary Vascular Centre is the place to go for all questions about vascular medicine and angiology. With its modern approach, the centre offers a complete range of services – and is considered a top provider not only of vascular surgery but also of cardiology, neurology and radiology, including interventional neuroradiology.

About us SRH Klinikum Karlsbad-Langensteinbach - Interdisciplinary Vascular Centre

Between the metropolitan region of Stuttgart and the pioneering technology centre of Karlsruhe lies an internationally recognised specialist hospital that continues to attract attention with innovative treatment methods and diagnostic innovations – the SRH Klinikum Karlsbad-Langensteinbach. The Vascular Centre, where people with complex vascular diseases are treated, is a great example of a progressive mix of patient-oriented acute care and forward-looking research.

It is primarily the interdisciplinary approach to treatment and the in-depth understanding of numerous medical specialties that have earned the SRH Klinikum Karlsbad-Langensteinbach its nationwide reputation. Be it muscles and the skeleton, the nervous system or the mind - or the heart and blood vessels: it is well known in Langensteinbach that certain clinical conditions can be treated better, more safely and in a more targeted manner through an interdisciplinary approach.

As the website explains, “We are highly specialised”, and, “We want to provide patients with the best possible care with innovative cutting-edge medicine and comprehensive treatment options.” This ambitious approach has transformed a major acute care provider in the Karlsruhe district into an internationally renowned clinic. The Vascular Centre, which is one of only five vascular medical centres in the whole of Baden-Württemberg to have been assessed and recognised by three specialist societies at the same time, is regarded as a prime example of the development of modern medicine.

Not surprising, since the Interdisciplinary Vascular Centre covers the entire range of modern cardiology and angiology. And as cardiovascular diseases always affect the entire organism, radiology and neurology are also part of the vascular centre – as is direct support from the hospital’s central emergency department. This means that if you are admitted with a heart attack or a stroke, you can always be sure that there will be an internal specialist on duty around the clock.

Leading role: development of contemporary vascular medicine

In recent years, vascular medicine in particular has developed rapidly – from diagnostics to new treatment options to prevention. A significant factor which is considered to be the foundation for the exceptional reputation of the certified Vascular Centre is the high level of competence of the senior physicians: experienced professionals work together here to care for patients with complex vascular medical diseases:

Dr Thomas Riester is the Head Consultant of the Department of Vascular Surgery. As a surgical specialist, he has focused entirely on vascular surgery and is also an endovascular surgeon – which means he is also able to operate within the vessels themselves, i.e. with catheter systems. He is the person to contact in the case of an aortic aneurysm, for instance. With his expertise, he is able to detect defective vessels during screening – and safely performs the most demanding endovascular procedures, supported by a modern angiography system with low radiation exposure and often even without contrast media. When it comes to deciding, for example, whether a thrombosis should be treated with medication or surgery, Dr Riester has a high level of expertise because he is familiar with a wide variety of techniques and treatment methods. Safe, gentle and state-of-the-art: the same applies to varicose veins and all other diseases affecting veins or arteries.

Dr Ralph Oberacker has a wealth of experience and knowledge as Head of the Cardiology Department: He specialises in internal medicine, cardiology and angiology, and also holds additional qualifications in internal intensive care medicine and emergency medicine. This means that when every minute counts, such as in the event of a heart attack, he is well prepared. The cardiac catheter laboratory in Langensteinbach is an example of how Dr Oberacker and his team can treat circulatory disorders or narrowed coronary vessels quickly and without complications. He is particularly adept at using the “world's smallest heart pump”, which was developed primarily for people with heart failure. It is called “Impella” and reduces the strain on the heart during a procedure with high-tech support – which lowers the risk of surgery for very seriously ill patients.

Dr Christiane Pöckler-Schöniger, specialist in diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology, works in the interdisciplinary Vascular Centre as head of the Department of Radiology/Neuroradiology at the SRH Klinikum Karlsbad-Langensteinbach. Today, neuroradiology offers much more than precise diagnostic procedures: Dr Pöckler-Schöniger and her team also perform interventions. As a specialist in interventional radiology, she treats constrictions and occlusions of the vessels and inserts vascular prostheses. In doing so, she is able to use the latest medical technology to provide the entire spectrum of radiological imaging and intervention. Large-scale state-of-the-art equipment is also part of the fully digitalised specialist department – including an MRI, two CT scans and the 3D whole-body scan EOS. Furthermore, the department is certified by the German Society for Interventional Radiology and Minimally Invasive Therapy (DeGIR).

Prof. Dr Michael Fetter is a specialist in neurology – and heads the Neurology Department in Langensteinbach. With his high level of expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, he makes an important contribution to the range of services offered by the Vascular Centre. In the acute setting, for chronic complaints or in early rehabilitation and in the case of diseases of the nervous system, Professor Fetter is there to support patients at all times with his university-level expertise and all his experience.

Optimal contact point for vascular diseases

There are therefore four superbly led specialist departments that make the interdisciplinary Vascular Centre the place to go for vascular diseases of all kinds in the populous region between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. The range of diseases that are professionally treated here is equally wide. The range of services includes minimally invasive interventions for vascular occlusions and stenoses with balloon dilatations or vascular prostheses as well as treatments for inflammatory vascular diseases and circulatory disorders. “Healthy vessels for an active life” is the motto in the Karlsbad district of Langensteinbach. This is also shared readily with others at national and international congresses.
