Easing pain and improving the quality of life: performing specific interventions concerning the sick lung or bronchi in order to identify disorders and to positively affect the course of the disease is the approach of interventional pulmonology / bronchology. The department has worldwide one-of-their-kind exam and operating rooms available which are all equipped with modern technology. To diagnose early stages of cancer, but also for the treatment of progressed tumors, all available medical methods are used. Flexible and rigid endoscopes are used for diagnostics and treatment. In order to be able to work efficiently and gently at the same time, small catheters with fiber optics, laser, ultrasound and heat and cold probes are used. High definition video endoscopes, optic fluorescence treatment, endobronchial ultrasound and all known techniques for taking of tissue samples are performed regularly. Specialists in clinical pathology are always present, making a prompt diagnosis possible via cytology. Many tumor patients can be treated by interventional techniques such as the application of a thermal laser, photodynamic therapy, stenting, oxygen tubes, etc.
Many diagnostic and therapeutic methods are also used for the treatment of various benign disorders, e.g. when airways are constricted or enlarged. For the diagnostics of vocal cord dysfunction, we use an endospirometer and other modalities of functional bronchoscopy. After the diagnosis of dyspnea and cough, drug or interventional therapy can be performed. One of our clinical focus areas is endoscopic treatment of pulmonary emphysema. All kinds of valves, blockers and coils are used for lung volume reduction. For this purpose, new available treatment methods are determined beforehand in order to find the best treatment possible for each individual patient. Appliances for breathing assistance for patients with COPD are developed and tested in cooperation with our industrial partners.
