Prof. Dr Hans-Christian Kolberg has been the Senior Consultant at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic of the Marienhospital in Bottrop (Academic Teaching Hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen) since 2005 and had been the Lead Consultant and Head of the Breast Centre of the Lubeck University Women’s Hospital up to that point. He is a member of several national and international specialists’ associations, collaborates on the Scientific Advisory Committee of Breast Cancer Germany (Brustkrebs Deutschland e.V.) and has been the deputy representative of the Association of Certified Breast Centres since 2016. In addition, Prof. Dr Kolberg regularly publishes articles in eminent specialist journals, delivers lectures nationally and internationally, primarily on the subject of breast cancer, and is an investigator in countless breast cancer studies, and is the Visiting Professor of Breast Surgery at the First School of Clinical Medicine in Nanking in China.
Prof. Dr Kolberg specialises in the treatment of malignant cancer conditions of the female breast and of the female genitalia. Further emphases are the treatment of prolapse and incontinence, as well as the treatment of fibroids. Because of his conviction that therapeutic approaches should be de-escalated wherever possible, his specialist fields also include high-focus ultrasound treatment of fibroids and fibroadenomata, as well as intra-operative radiotherapy for breast cancer.
Echotherapy, a non-invasive treatment alternative to surgery for fibroadenomas of the breast, is only offered in 15 centres throughout Germany and the Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the Marienhospital Bottrop is one of them. Echotherapy combines two therapeutic procedures: highly focused ultrasound (HIFU) and ultrasound imaging for real-time monitoring during treatment. Echotherapy uses high-energy ultrasound waves to heat the tissue locally, thereby reducing its size. Information on echotherapy can be found at https://echotherapie.com.
Under the management of its Senior Consultant, Prof. Dr Kolberg, the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic at the Marienhospital in Bottrop was certified as a Certified Breast Centre by the German Cancer Society and the German Senology Association in 2007 and as a Certified Genital Cancer Centre by the German Cancer Society in 2010. In addition, together with the Breast Centre of the University Hospital, Essen, the Breast Centre at the Marienhospital in Bottrop forms the Essen 1 Breast Centre at the Western German Tumour Centre. These centres meet strict criteria evaluating their specialist competence, their technical facilities and their experience in the treatment of breast cancer and genital cancer.
In addition to the treatment of gynaecological conditions, obstetrics is also a focus of the clinic. The objective of the well-trained personnel is the caring support of women during pregnancy until the discharge of the mother and child after the delivery. It is important to calm the expectant mothers’ fear of the delivery and to facilitate a safe delivery for them. Consequently, the service portfolio of the clinic also includes the performance of “gentle” caesarean sections and water births, as well as high-risk obstetrics, the care of extremely premature births and gestational diabetes, with training in conjunction with the paediatric hospital and the ÄKZert-certified Level 1 perinatal centre.
Prof. Dr Kolberg’s particular aspiration in terms of highly advanced medical practice is to be a constant and consistent point of contact for his patients.
