About us

Prof. Ralf Sodian is an experienced specialist cardiac surgeon and, as its Chief Physician, has headed the Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Lahr / Baden MediClin Cardiac Center since April 2015. Previously, after completing his specialist training in 2005, he worked at the German Cardiac Center in Berlin, initially as a Chief Resident later as a Principal Consultant at the Grosshadern Cardiac Surgery Clinic and Polyclinic of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Prof. Sodian was also made the Director of the Cardiac Surgery Clinic at the Augustinum, the second site of the University of Munich Hospital, in September 2011. As a specialist cardiac surgeon, Prof. Sodian specializes in the surgical treatment of all congenital and acquired cardiac conditions and cardiac defects, both in children and in adults. Hence, for example, conditions such as coronary heart disease (CHD), circulatory disorders of the heart, acute cardiac infarct, cardiac valve defects and cardiac insufficiency are among Prof. Sodian’s treatment emphases. In addition, he focuses on minimal invasive cardiac surgery and the transcatheter replacement of cardiac valves (TAVI, TMVR). At the Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Lahr / Baden MediClin Cardiac Center, Prof. Sodian, with his team consisting of qualified cardiac surgeons and expert care personnel, covers the entire spectrum of state-of-the-art cardiac surgery.

This includes, inter alia, coronary surgery for constricted or occluded coronary vessels (coronary arteries), arterial revascularization in the course of bypass surgery, aortic surgery for conditions of the aorta (aortic aneurysms) and cardiac valve surgery, in which diseased cardiac valves are either replaced minimally invasively or reconstructed. The service portfolio is completed by rhythm surgery, including the implantation of cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators, for example, and cardiac insufficiency surgery with the use of ECLS systems and an artificial heart program (LVAD, RVAD). Each year, Prof. Sodian and his team perform around 1,500 cardiac operations. Thus, in the field of cardiac surgery, the Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Clinic of the Lahr / Baden MediClin Cardiac Center is among the top-performing clinics in Germany. Here, together with his team, Prof. Sodian invariably ensures that the patients are given state-of the art treatment and care of the highest medical standard. The patients also benefit thereby, inter alia, from the fact that the Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Clinic of the MediClin Cardiac Center has already helped to develop a large number of innovative surgical techniques and has committed itself to transparency and quality assurance for the benefit of the patients. The Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Anesthesiology Departments and the Intensive Care Department work very closely together in order ultimately to achieve the best possible results for each individual patient.
