About us

Dr Wolfgang Franz is a specialist surgeon, casualty surgeon and sports physician who specialises in knee surgery. As one of the best knee specialists in Germany, Dr Franz performs around 1,000 procedures on the knee each year. Here, his key services include, in particular, replacement surgery for anterior and posterior cruciate ligament tears and instability, as well as revision procedures following previous cruciate ligament surgery and recurrent instability of the knee. Thus, altogether, he performs approximately 400 cruciate ligament reconstructions annually. Moreover, in 2000, he developed his own surgical technique for the gentle removal of the tendon transplant for cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Dr Franz’s other treatment emphases are meniscal suture and meniscal replacement, partial endoprosthetics of the knee joint using a single-sided sled prosthesis and special treatment techniques for osteoarthritis of the knee such as cartilage transplantation. Here, Dr Franz primarily utilises minimally invasive, arthroscopic surgical techniques.

Dr Franz completed his medical studies in Mainz and Coblenz, before he undertook his training as a specialist in various hospitals between 1984 and 1993 and took up a position as a hospital physician. At that time, Dr Franz had already begun to focus his work on surgery to the knee joint. In 1991 and in subsequent years, he completed several residencies under well-known knee surgeons, for example, Dr Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado and Dr Heinz-Juergen Eichhorn in Straubing. He has been continually able to extend his skill in this specialisation, both over the course of his long years of surgical practice and within the context of his scientific work.

Since 1993, Dr Franz has worked as an independent surgeon and joint proprietor at the Lutrina Hospital in Kaiserslautern, a highly specialised facility for knee surgery and procedures on the shoulder, the ankle and foot and the hand. Here, he performs both out-patient and in-patient surgery. In addition, Dr Franz also performs surgery at the Gruenstadt District Hospital and, since the middle of 2015, in the Department of Orthopaedics, Casualty Surgery and Endoprosthetics at the Ethianum Hospital in Heidelberg.

Dr Franz has not only been able to demonstrate his wide experience and expertise in the field of knee surgery within the course of his surgical activity, but also as the head of scientific studies, the author of a variety of scientific publications and best-selling books on the topic of osteoarthritis of the knee and in lectures at workshops and in training courses. In the meantime, as an internationally recognised knee specialist, Dr Franz trains doctors from across the globe in the latest surgical techniques in knee surgery.

Dr Franz also has many years of experience as a sports physician. Hence, from 1989 to 2000, he took care of the German football league team, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, and has been the club’s physician since the 2000/2001 football season.
