Dr. Jan Matussek has been the Chief Physician of the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics and Pediatric Traumatology, Pediatric Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic at the HELIOS Klinikum Emil von Behring GmbH in Berlin Zehlendorf since February 2019. Prior to this, he was the Principal Consultant at the Asklepios Bad Abbach Specialist Hospital in Bavaria for 14 years. Pediatric orthopedics is a crucial field in orthopedics as a whole – ultimately, the root of many orthopedic problems is to be found in the growth phases. Musculoskeletal disorders and conditions in children have different emphases, which Dr. Matussek and his dedicated team attend to with the required experience, the essential specialized knowledge and psychological empathy. A child’s skeletal system can be injured due to an accident or damaged due to a congenital condition. And so, malformations of the spinal column are among frequent and typical skeletal conditions in young people. Help for the little ones then generally comes in the form of corsets. The high level of competence and diagnostic performance of Dr. Matussek in this specialist field and his clinical study of the treatment of spinal curvatures have been awarded the “MOT (Medical Orthopedics Technology) Research Prize”. The treatment of fractures and luxations is also a part of Dr. Matussek’s daily routine, and his core areas of operation are the Pediatric Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic for diagnosis and treatment and the First Aid Post for emergency treatment. Malalignments in the area of the arms, legs and the spinal column from infancy until the end of puberty are carefully and gently corrected without restricting the musculoskeletal system of the adolescent too much. The in-house orthopedic workshop and the orthopedic shoemakers guarantee the optimal corset provision and orthotic and prosthetic provision for disorders, injuries and injury sequelae of the musculoskeletal system with the required therapeutic appliances. In-patient treatment is given in the hospital and guarantees a child-oriented setting. There are also 10 family rooms, so that parents have the option of staying with their child in the hospital in the case of an in-patient stay. Various play and handicraft pastime options are available. Together with the orthopedic specialist team, pediatric nurses, pediatric plaster nurses, physical therapists, orthopedic technicians and Social Service staff are available for our little patients in order to carry out therapeutic measures as gently and as successfully as possible. Dr. Matussek values treating his little patients as conservatively as possible and as out-patients and, in the case of a surgical, in-patient procedure, treats the girls and boys very sensitively in order for them to become more mobile again as quickly as possible. And not just in his own department: Dr. Matussek is also committed to regular assistance operations in India on behalf of Interplast-Germany, running over several weeks, in the course of which he performs surgery on his young patients and thus helps provide them with greater quality of life.
