About us

The ETHIANUM in Heidelberg provides medical counseling and treatment, as well as surgical procedures at an international standard. Over 20 highly specialized medical specialists care for patients in a variety of specialist departments. Prof. Felix Zeifang and Dr. Michael Lehmann are jointly responsible for patients with conditions and dysfunctions in the area of the shoulder; in addition, Prof. Zeifang is also responsible for the elbow area, while Dr. Lehmann, together with the shoulder, also specializes in joint-maintaining hip procedures and sports traumatology. Prof. Zeifang, as a current member of the board, and Dr. Lehmann, as a founding member (1993), are also associated as members of the German Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Association (DVSE).
Prof. Felix Zeifang is a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery, as well as orthopedic surgery with additional qualifications in special orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, rheumatology and pediatric orthopedics. Within this discipline, he specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery. Before Prof. Zeifang came to the Ethianum Heidelberg, he occupied leading positions at the Heidelberg University Hospital for over 12 years. Here, most recently, he headed the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Section, as well as the Upper Extremity Section. In addition, Prof. Zeifang held the position of Head of the Training Center of the German Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Association and cared for top athletes at the Olympic Center.

For Prof. Zeifang, the treatment of patients, a commitment to science as well as teaching are intimately related. Thanks to the combination of these three areas of activity, the specialist in elbow and shoulder surgery is in close contact with colleagues and is able to develop and establish new ideas. Prof. Zeifang has published numerous contributions in the specialist literature and has been honored multiple times for his research.

Even from the beginning of his orthopedic and sports traumatology training, his partner, Dr. Michael Lehmann, concentrated on the treatment of disorders and injuries to the shoulder and hip joints. His entire professional career has been shaped by research stays and responsibilities in specialist orthopedic departments, not only in Germany and Switzerland, but also in the USA. Dr. Lehmann is a founding member of the German Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Association, the DVSE (1993). He also initiated the internationally active Athletikum Group, an association of competent sports physicians specializing in the care of sportsmen and -women.

As a specialist in orthopedics and sports medicine, Dr. Lehmann has been one of the European pioneers in the area of arthroscopic and endoprosthetic shoulder surgery since 1990. Similarly, following the development of the special instruments required, he has also been intensely involved in joint-maintaining and reconstructive hip arthroscopy since 2004. Together with the treatment of sportsmen and -women, his main focus is on the objective of having a positive effect the progress of osteoarthritides in order thus either to avoid or to postpone a hip prosthesis. As one of the few specialists in this field, Dr. Lehmann also works as a consultant for the Basel Sports Clinic of the Swiss Hirslanden hospitals group. Dr. Michael Lehmann is a member of the International Association for Joint-maintaining Hip Arthroscopy, the ISHA.

In collaboration and regular communication with the attending physical therapists, we care for our patients until a suitable function, optimized and fully able to withstand stress and, where necessary, also suitable for maximum athletic capacity has been reestablished. The interdisciplinary teamwork with the Department of Physical Therapy is particularly important to us; it is the absolutely indispensable prerequisite for the success of the holistic treatment.
