Prof. Thomas Koeppel is the Senior Consultant in the Department of General and Endovascular Vascular Surgery of the Asklepios Hospitals in St. Georg and Wandsbek in Hamburg. As a specialist vascular surgeon, Prof. Koeppel, together with other specialists, such as angiologists and radiologists, cares for patients with arterial and vascular conditions in the Specialist Centre for Vascular Conditions. Prof. Koeppel’s personal treatment emphases are the surgical treatment of vascular conditions, such as aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection and constrictions of the carotid arteries and of the mesenteric arteries and arteries of the leg. The vascular surgeon also treats, inter alia, chronic wounds, varicose veins, diabetic foot syndrome and creates access for dialysis (shunt and catheter for blood purification).
Prior to the treatment, Prof. Koeppel examines the patient in detail and, together with his colleagues, develops a therapeutic concept adapted to the patient. This does not always have to be characterised by surgery and intervention (balloon, vascular support (“stent”)), but can also comprise the administration of medications. In any case, however, the vascular surgeon is guided by the internationally recognised medical guidelines. Thanks to a certified quality management and involvement in medical research, the treatment is always given in accordance with the highest standards and according to the current knowledge and recommendations.
Prof. Koeppel’s department is a part of the Cardiac, Vascular and Diabetes Centre, where, together with specialists in vascular medicine (vascular surgery, angiology, neuroradiology), specialists in cardiac medicine (cardiology / cardiac surgery), in diabetology and in preventative medicine also contribute to the early detection and advanced treatment of cardiovascular conditions. In the process, the diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerotic vascular conditions (“calcification of the blood vessels”) take centre stage. For the treatment of circulatory disorders, the vascular surgeon in Hamburg utilises less invasive techniques whenever possible. These include balloon dilatation, stent implantation, implantation of vascular prostheses and catheter techniques.
At the Vascular Centre, the vascular surgeon in Hamburg can rely on a state of the art angiography laboratory, two vascular surgery operating theatres and a hybrid operating theatre. So, vascular care for patients with acute and chronic conditions of the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels is ensured, twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per year.
One particular focus is in the treatment of aneurysms of the thoracic and abdominal aorta. Here, we try to treat the aneurysm using a stent. This saves the patient having to have his abdominal cavity or rib-cage opened up. If this is not possible or reasonable, “classic surgery” is performed.
