Prof. Erwin Blessing is a medical specialist in internal medicine, cardiology and angiology and thus an established specialist in central and peripheral blood vessels. He has been the Chief Physician for internal medicine at the SRH Hospital, Karlsbad-Langensteinbach since April 2014. The hospital is a specialized and acute hospital for the Nordbaden region and an academic teaching hospital of the University of Heidelberg, at whose University Hospital Prof. Blessing was previously employed as the Chief Resident of the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumonology. Under the organizational management of Prof. Blessing, the hospital, as the sole simultaneously triple certified vascular center, provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care of patients with medical conditions of the vascular system. These include circulatory disorders of the extremities, the abdominal vessels and the vessels supplying the brain. The treatment emphases of the interdisciplinary vascular center also include inflammatory conditions and complex diabetic foot syndrome. The state-of-the-art equipment of the vascular center combines interdisciplinary, networked expert knowledge in the fields of internal medicine, vascular surgery, radiology and neurology. With a precise diagnosis and individual treatment concepts, optimal vascular medical patient care can be provided. This is oriented toward the most up to date scientific insights and its quality is continually monitored by the high standards of the IQM (Initiative for Quality Medicine).
Together, the Vascular Center and Prof. Blessing stand for the establishment of pioneering innovations in medical treatment techniques, which promise the cardiovascular patient particular therapeutic convenience. Thus, in the Karlsbad-Langensteinbach Vascular Center, specialized vascular stabilizing stents are utilized in constricted or occluded arteries of the upper leg. The stents continually release medication and ensure improved vascular permeability. Since less scar tissue is also able to form in the blood vessel, reocclusion (restenosis) of the affected blood vessels appears markedly less frequently in patients treated using this technique in comparison with treatment using conventional stents. A further combination of medical high-tech and vascular surgical expertise which benefits the patients of the Vascular Center is the minimal invasive implantation of mini-cardiac pacemakers. These are placed directly in the cardiac chamber by the vascular surgeon via the patient's groin using a catheter system. At just 2 to 3 centimeters in length, the pacemaker capsule is much smaller than a conventional pacemaker and is only around 10% of the size of earlier models. Thanks to its firmly anchored seating in the heart instead of under the collar bone, the pacemaker is not externally visible. In addition, the very small format pacing device needs no electrode cables into the heart and thus minimizes the risk of infection.
As well, the procedure itself and living with this type of mini-pacemaker are substantially more comfortable for the patient. Prof. Blessing has also utilized is extensive expertise in the field of vascular medicine since April 2016 as the head of the newly founded Cardiac Catheter Laboratory at the Karlsbad-Langensteinbach Hospital. The cardiac catheter is a vital instrument for the examination, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions such as the constriction of the coronary vessels. Particularly for cardiac infarction and pulmonary embolism, speed and precision count in order to be able to give the patient the optimal and correct treatment. With the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and the Vascular Center, Prof. Blessing and the SRH Hospital, Karlsbad-Langensteinbach succeed not only in establishing excellent medical care for cardiovascular patients in the region but, at the same time, the cardiac catheter laboratory expands the diagnostic and therapeutic range of the Department of Neurosurgery and thus can be utilized, for example, for precise and hence risk-minimizing vascular examination prior to complex spinal surgery. Are you looking for an expert in vascular medicine at the highest standard? Every day, Prof. Blessing and the Vascular Center of the SRH Hospital in Karlsbad-Langensteinbach step up to the plate with their specialist knowledge and experience for the health of your heart.
