About us Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Pantelis

Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Pantelis is a specialist in surgery, intestinal surgery, special intestinal surgery, and is a proctologist and the Chief Physician of the Department of General and Intestinal Surgery of the GFO Hospitals in Bonn, with their units, St. Marien Hospital Bonn-Venusberg and St. Josef Hospital Bonn-Beuel. He specializes in surgical procedures in the entire abdominal cavity and on the thyroid gland and parathyroid glands. Prof. Dr. Pantelis’ therapeutic emphases also include coloproctology.

In the course of the surgical technique, also known as keyhole surgery, a long incision is not made in the abdominal wall, but only a number of very small incisions are required, through which small surgical instruments, including a camera, are then guided inside the patient's body. Here, the camera image is transferred to a monitor so that the surgeon can easily see the surgical site. To date, approximately 30,000 minimal invasive procedures have been performed at the St. Marien Hospital. Today, the range of procedures able to be performed minimal invasively includes all the organs of the abdominal cavity and of the thoracic cavity, the adrenal glands and even the thyroid gland.

In October 2010, the Department was certified by the German General and Abdominal Surgery Association (DGAV) and the Surgical Working Group for Minimal Invasive Surgery (CAMIC) as a Center of Excellence for Minimal Invasive Surgery. Recertification takes place every three years, most recently in November 2016. Since that time, the Department has been able to refer to itself as a Center of Excellence for Minimal Invasive Surgery. The award stands for quality assured, state-of-the-art surgery.

In January 2013, the Department was certified by the German General and Abdominal Surgery Association (DGAV) and the Hernia Surgery Working Group (CAH) as a Center of Excellence for Hernia Surgery. The most recent certification took place in January 2020. Approximately 900 hernia procedures of all degrees of difficulty are performed in the Department each year and so we are one of the TOP 10 hospitals across Germany. Here, inter alia, inguinal hernias, femoral hernias, umbilical hernias, incisional hernias, hiatus hernias, epigastric hernias and all rare forms of hernia are treated. Since the beginning of 2021, we have been offering a new and innovative treatment option for large to vast incisional hernias. In this procedure, the abdominal wall is stretched with the help of a special device, eliminating the need for a complex and complication-prone component separation. Prof. Dr. Pantelis and his team at the St. Marien Hospital have wide experience and expertise in the field of the treatment of gastric and colon cancer. Approximately 6000 cancer operations have been performed since 1990. An integrative Bowel Center was founded in Bonn and in the county of Rhein-Sieg in 2008. The members are all private physicians and physicians employed in various hospitals whose work focuses mainly on cancer. The objective of the Center is the optimal and individual in-patient and out-patient treatment of each individual patient. Prof. Schneider, Prof. Dr. Pantelis’ predecessor, is a cofounder of the integrative Bowel Center. The Center has been certified by the German Cancer Association (DKG) since February 2010 and covers the entire range of care services for bowel cancer patients, from chemotherapy and radiotherapy to pain therapy and psychooncology care, up to follow-up care and support for the introduction of rehabilitation measures. Each year, the services are reviewed once again in terms of audits and recertifications.

A certification as a Center of Excellence for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery is aimed for.
