About us

Prof. Ulrich Mittelkoetter has been the Chief Physician of the Department of Surgery at the Katharinen Hospital in Unna, which hosts multiple nationally significant certified surgical Centers of Expertise and also functions as an academic teaching hospital of the Wilhelm University of Westphalia in Munster, since 2006. The centers under the umbrella of the Department of Surgery include the Endocrine Center (subdivided into the Pancreas Center and the Thyroid Center), the Intestine Center and the Surgical Oncology Center. The highly experienced Head of the Department of Surgery, Prof. Mittelkoetter, looks back on almost 30 years of experience in the field of surgery. The evidence of this is his impressive résumé, of which only a few important stages will be highlighted here. Following his licensing as a physician in 1991 Prof. Mittelkoetter worked at the University Hospital in Bochum, in Wurzburg and in Munster, as well as in the USA as a fellowship holder at the University of Pittsburgh. Prof. Mittelkoetter obtained his qualification as a specialist surgeon in 1996, and has extended this by further specialist examinations, and finally, in 2002, complemented this with a specialist qualification in abdominal surgery.

Prof. Mittelkoetter has worked in a leadership position since 1996. Prior to taking up the post as Chief Physician in the Department of Surgery at the Katharinen Hospital in Unna, which he also headed for some years as the Deputy Chief Physician and finally as Medical Director, Prof. Mittelkoetter had already served for two years as the Deputy Director of the University Surgical Hospital in Bochum and of its Pancreas Center. Prof. Mittelkoetter advanced his academic career with his habilitation in 2001, which was ultimately followed in 2008 with his appointment as an Adjunct Professor at the Ruhr University of Bochum (RUB). He has been an examiner for graduates of the 3rd state examination at the RUB and the University of Munster since 2001; in addition, Prof. Mittelkoetter is involved as a consultant and examiner, focusing on his specialist fields of general, intestinal and special intestinal surgery, for the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association. For the outstanding quality of his treatment at the Intestine Center in Unna, Prof. Mittelkoetter was awarded the Seal of Quality of the West German Intestine Center in 2014 and 2016. A further focus of his clinical work is surgery to the thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands and to the pancreas. Here, whenever possible, Prof. Mittelkoetter and his colleagues rely on “gentle techniques”, i.e. minimal invasive endoscopic procedures, which are very promising, particularly in the treatment of the internal organs (gallbladder, stomach, large intestine, appendix) and for hernias. Thanks to their wide experience, the surgical team under Prof. Mittelkoetter is able to minimize the patient’s tissue damage and blood loss during an endoscopic procedure. As a result, the patient is able to recover from surgery better and more rapidly. The successful treatment and, of course, the patient’s welfare are the highest priority of all the employees at the Katharinen Hospital Unna. Empathy, medical competence and technology at the cutting edge of development help our patients to obtain a better quality of life and a more rapid recovery.
