Asst Lect. Dr Andreas Schmelzer is a specialist in otorhinolaryngology (ORL), also known as ear nose and throat (ENT) surgery, and in neck and facial surgery who works in Aarau. As an ENT or ORL specialist, Asst Lect. Dr Schmelzer specialises in the treatment of important head, neck and sensory organs. This includes, in particular, all conditions of the ears, the nose, the nasal sinuses, the neck and the larynx, as well as disorders of the hearing, vocal and language functions, indispensable for human communication, and disorders of the balance system, which is important for physical control.
In addition, as an ENT specialist, Asst Lect. Dr Schmelzer is an expert in the various examination methods which can be employed for the precise diagnosis of the various ear, nose and throat conditions. These include tests for assessing the patient’s hearing, balance, sense of smell and sense of taste.
Asst Lect. Dr Schmelzer has worked at the Centre for Ear, Nose and Throat Conditions (ORL Centre) of the Hirslanden Hospital in Aarau since January 2002. Previously, he was employed for 11 years as a consultant at a university hospital. Dr Schmelzer works at the ORL Centre in Aarau with a variety of specialists in interdisciplinary collaboration in order to be able to provide the patients with the optimal comprehensive care for all ENT conditions.
Asst Lect. Dr Schmelzer’s core competencies include, in particular, the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory conditions of the ears and paranasal sinuses, as well as tumours in the head and neck area. Other treatment emphases of Dr Schmelzer include the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss, vertigo and Menière’s disease.
One particular focus of Asst Lect. Dr Schmelzer is neck and facial surgery, in which he has additional training and an additional specialist qualification. As a specialist field of otorhinolaryngology, neck and facial surgery is concerned with surgical procedures on the ear, the nose and the paranasal sinuses, on the oral cavity and the pharynx, on the larynx and the neck, as well as the adjacent areas of the base of the skull and the face. Within the framework of neck and facial surgery, inter alia, microsurgery or endoscopic surgical techniques can be used, as well as laser techniques.
In the area of neck and facial surgery, Dr Schmelzer focuses on surgical procedures for the treatment of otosclerosis and cholesteatoma, endonasal surgery to the paranasal sinuses, middle ear surgery to improve hearing and surgery to the salivary glands.
