About us ATOS Klinik Stuttgart – Hip, knee, foot and ankle surgery

The ATOS Klinik Stuttgart has quickly made a name for itself as a clinic for cutting-edge orthopaedic medicine, not only because of its comprehensive diagnostics and its individual and always holistic therapies, but also because of its appeal far beyond the region. The clinic also convinces with high-class service and equipment on an international level. Since 2021, the still young institution has been offering solutions for the entire musculoskeletal system – i.e. also for the hip, knee, foot and ankle. Several renowned specialists have been recruited for this: Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Michael Gabel, Dr. med. Jürgen Gröber, and PD Dr. med. Bernhard Clasbrummel.

What does quality of life mean? For most people, this means that they can move as they please – unrestrictedly and pain-free. Because this is the only way to enjoy everyday life and to combine professional tasks with social activities. This is precisely the goal that the experienced specialists at the ATOS Klinik Stuttgart have set themselves: They want to enable all patients who suffer from mobility restrictions to return to normal life quickly. Freedom from pain, regaining physical resilience, vitality and freedom of movement – this is what all specialists at the clinic focus on.

With Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Michael Gabel, Dr. med. Jürgen Gröber and PD Dr. med. Bernhard Clasbrummel, the ATOS Klinik Stuttgart has three exceptional experts who specialise in all diseases and injuries of the so-called lower extremities. From hip to foot, these specialists know every tendon and ligament, every muscle and bone around these joints that are so important for our mobility.

High expertise in the lower extremities

The specialists are united by a clear approach: At the ATOS Klinik Stuttgart, everything is always done to avoid surgery. Thanks to their great expertise in diagnostics alone, these specialists are in a position to assess what helps best and how, following a diagnosis that is as differentiated as it is comprehensive. If there is a possibility that those affected can do something themselves and that an improvement can be achieved, for example through targeted physiotherapy or the use of aids, interventions can indeed often be avoided. The specialists often use very helpful shock wave treatment and various injections with hyaluronic acid and the patient’s own blood ACP.

But if that does not promise relief, the specialists in the metropolitan region in southwest Germany are among those highly specialised specialists who are familiar with the most innovative methods of modern surgery. Patients can therefore rely at all times on individual counselling on non-operative and operative procedures, which always includes the patient’s personal situation.

Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Michael Gabel, a specialist in orthopaedics, came into contact with foot problems as a child. He worked regularly in the workshop of the large orthopaedic shoe technology business run by his father as a master orthopaedic shoemaker in Bad Mergentheim during his school years – and also during his medical studies. These experiences inspired and shaped him. He clearly found his way to orthopaedics at an early age

and equally clearly specialised in foot and ankle from the very beginning. With its 26 bones connected by sixty muscles, over a hundred ligaments and exactly 214 tendons via the joints, the foot takes on a special role in anatomy. What’s more, it has more sensory cells than our face. For example, Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Gabel was already giving lectures on arthrosis therapies as a trainee doctor – and proved his thirst for research just as early when, together with his father, he developed an innovative therapeutic shoe that provides relief following forefoot operations.

Today he is known not least for his work as a scientific advisor to the journal “Orthopädie-Schuhtechnik”, as co-editor of the journal “Fuß und Sprunggelenk” and through international lectures. In the Stuttgart area, he was in charge of setting up several departments for foot and ankle joints and so acquired an international reputation. He runs a maximum care pilot clinic FootCert and was one of the few orthopaedic surgeons to run a diabetes foot treatment facility for many years (certified by the German Diabetes Society).

He maintains contacts especially with Russia and Ukraine, where he has travelled frequently, often under difficult circumstances. He is the president of the German-Russian-Ukrainian Circle of Friends of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Traumatologists, and in 2000 he received an honorary doctorate from the Sitenko Institute at Kharkov University for his many services to German-Ukrainian exchange. He is also a member of numerous professional associations, such as the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery and the German Association for Foot and Ankle D.A.F. e.V. and the Technical Orthopaedics Initiative.

In 2004 he was awarded the D.A.F. scholarship to Prof Pisani in Turin and has since been an instructor at many surgical courses. For years on the D.A.F. advisory board, he was elected to the D.A.F. board as secretary in 2018.

And of course he is also highly recognised in the region: If, for example, SWR television needs a highly specialised contact person who explains complex facts about the foot and ankle in an understandable and empathetic way, he is also the first choice. Because from technical orthopaedics to diabetic foot syndrome, all orthopaedic problems of the foot to rheumatism orthopaedics, he knows all the details and every secret hidden behind the foot and ankle.

As a specialist in surgery, orthopaedics and trauma surgery, Dr. med. Jürgen Gröber has the additional qualifications of special trauma surgery, sports medicine and physical therapy. On the one hand, he has a high reputation as a specialist for shoulder and elbow surgery, but early on he also focused on the knee joint with all its facets. As the largest joint in the human body, the knee fascinated him from the very beginning – also because it can be affected by a variety of injuries and diseases at any age. At the ATOS Clinic, Dr Gröber is fortunate to be able to exchange ideas about the knee joint with PD Dr Clasbrummel at the highest level, to the benefit of the patients. Dr Gröber has many years of experience in all forms of treatment for the knee and shoulder. As a proven expert in sports injuries he is popular with professional athletes and amateur athletes alike, not least because of his minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures.
Dr Gröber, who is an instructor for the Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery, was the head physician for sports orthopaedics and shoulder surgery at the Paulinenhilfe Orthopaedic Clinic at the Diakonie-Klinikum Stuttgart for many years. He also holds a state examination in biology and sport.

Whether it is a meniscus complaint, a cruciate ligament tear or cartilage damage, Dr. Gröber finds the right treatment method for all malpositions, injuries and illnesses around the knee, which usually enables a rapid return to the usual mobility. Gonarthrosis – arthritis in the knee area – is also one of the specialist areas of the specialist doctor.

PD Dr. med. Bernhard Clasbrummel focused on the hip early on – and on the knee. He is a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery, surgery and special trauma surgery and has a first-class international reputation, particularly in hip joint surgery. This is also due to the fact that he has mastered state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical techniques that have won respect for their muscle-sparing properties. For example, he often uses the AMIS method, which is considered the gentlest method for hip surgery worldwide: In the process, no muscles, tendons or nerves are cut on the way to the hip joint, which allows for a significantly shorter recovery time. This not only ensures a quick return to everyday life, but also allows the patient to tackle sporting activities directly thanks to the unchanged muscle functions.

Dr Clasbrummel also uses the muscle-sparing AMIS method for hip prostheses. The proven hip specialist is thus considered a master of minimally invasive implantation of hip prostheses – and in the reconstruction of hip joints. His experience and enormous degree of specialisation also ensure international recognition. In his career spanning more than 25 years, he also worked at various hospitals as chief physician for many years and completed well over 20,000 operations. A large proportion of these interventions involved damage to the hip, from accidents, overuse, or wear and tear.

Clearly PD Dr. med. Bernhard Clasbrummel is very familiar with all the causes of hip pain and hip complaints – whether it is coxarthrosis, classic hip arthrosis or hip impingement, in which the normal range of movement of the hip joint is disturbed such that the neck of the femur touches the front edge of the acetabulum. Especially in the last-cited field of joint medicine (hip impingement), PD Dr. Clasbrummel ranks among the outstanding specialists.

Depending on the wear and tear of the joint cartilage, which is sometimes also accompanied by metabolic diseases, PD Dr Clasbrummel’s further expertise comes into play. Artificial joints are also provided at the ATOS Klinik Stuttgart at the highest international level. Here, PD Dr Clasbrummel determines exactly the safe and long-lasting prosthesis – and naturally takes care to preserve the muscle functions and the bone and ligament structure as far as possible. The goal here is also clear. Many people start an active sporting life shortly after receiving their special prosthesis. And when it comes to the knee, he has another specialist at his side: Dr. med. Jürgen Gröber.

Three specialists for all malpositions, diseases and injuries

The range of possible diseases and injuries in this area is as broad as the specialist’s range of services. Whether hallux valgus, hallux rigidus or hammer and claw toes, whether tarsal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, buckling and flat feet or clubfeet or an annoying heel spur – Dr Gabel is highly familiar with it all.

All specialists who are responsible for the high standing of the ATOS Klinik Stuttgart belong to renowned professional associations and often accompany important positions there. This also ensures that all specialists are optimally networked and so always remain up-to-date on modern variants of diagnostics or innovative therapy methods. And of course, as highly specialised experts, ATOS doctors are used to thinking across disciplines and relying on the expertise of other specialists. This is also indicated by the high standing that the clinic has achieved in a very short time with regard to second opinions by specialists.

Anyone who must deal with diseases or injuries to the hip, knee, foot or ankle can rely on the great expertise of several experienced specialists. This is what the ATOS Clinic in the capital of Baden-Württemberg stands for. Here, patients receive individual therapies with a holistic approach to regain lost mobility as quickly as possible – and finally to be able to actively participate in life again.
