About us Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital, Bruderholz site

The Clinic of Surgery of the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital with its three locations in Liestal, Bruderholz and Laufen covers the entire spectrum of general and visceral surgery, also known as abdominal surgery. This mainly includes surgeries on the organs of the digestive tract - i.e. the stomach, intestines and esophagus - as well as surgeries on the gall bladder, liver and pancreas.

The field of general and visceral surgery also covers the surgical treatment of diseases of organs outside the abdominal cavity. These especially include diseases of the hormone-producing organs thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands, with which the specialists at the Surgical Clinics of the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital deal within the framework of so-called endocrine surgery.

General and visceral surgery at the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital also includes hernia surgery, which covers the surgical treatment of abdominal wall hernias such as inguinal or hiatus hernias.

High expertise in cancer cases

One of the main areas of expertise of the specialists at the Surgical Clinics of the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital is - across locations and disciplines - the treatment of cancer of the abdominal organs, including, for example, stomach cancer or colon cancer. Of course, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and Colitis Ulcerosa as well as diseases of the gall bladder and bile ducts such as gallstones are also treated.

Within the field of proctology, diseases of the rectum are treated, for example hemorrhoids.

The Clinic of Surgery of the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital offers:

  • A certified colorectal cancer center
  • A competence centre for hernia surgery
  • A reference centre for minimally invasive surgery
  • A primary center for obesity surgery (bariatric surgery)
  • Special consultation hours for proctology, diseases of the pelvic floor
  • A special proctological consultation for women
  • A special consultation for endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands)
  • Wound consultation hours

Minimally invasive surgical techniques

A special focus of the Department of Surgery at the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital is minimally invasive surgery, also known as keyhole surgery. For example, the range of services includes minimally invasive surgeries using the DaVinci surgical robot, state-of-the-art keyhole techniques with HD and 3D video optics, minimally invasive inguinal and abdominal wall hernia surgeries, for example TAPP or TEP techniques and IPOM techniques. Surgeries on the small and large intestine are also preferably performed in a minimally invasive manner, if necessary with the DaVinci robot.

The medical and nursing care in the Clinic of Surgery of the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital is always based on the most modern diagnostic methods and the latest technical equipment as well as on current international guidelines and standards. This is guaranteed by the large and experienced team of doctors, nursing and surgical staff.

The Bruderholz site in particular is represented by Dr. Christine Glaser, Co-Chief Physician, and the Senior Physician Dr. Dietmar Eucker. As suitably specialised doctors, they are responsible for general and visceral surgery within the above-mentioned spectrum. Furthermore, Dr. Claudia von Arx-Küng and Dr. Georg Wilhelm Meier-Fiorese act as specialists for vascular surgery and Dr. Reinhard Stoll as a specialist for bariatric surgery (adiposity surgery).

Competence Center for Hernia Surgery

With more than 500 hernia surgeries every year, the Hernia Centre of the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital is one of the largest in Switzerland. Under the direction of Chief Physician Professor Dr. Robert Rosenberg and Dr. Dietmar Eucker (Senior Physician), a high level of internationally renowned expertise is available there - with a team of proven experts: Dr. Christine Glaser, Dr, Bernd Schenkluhn, Dr. Andres Heigl and Dr. Sebastian Lamm.

In our special hernia consultations, all problems affecting the abdominal wall and the diaphragm are assessed by our experienced specialists and treatments are planned according to the latest international standards and scientific knowledge. The spectrum of these surgeries ranges from simple inguinal hernias to highly complex abdominal wall reconstructions. The experts are also available to assess chronic pain conditions or sportsmen's groins. This also includes abdominal wall problems during and after pregnancy.

A wide range of diagnostic possibilities

The wide range of diagnostic options includes abdominal wall and groin ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. For the individually developed therapy concepts, state-of-the-art surgical methods are used, often using minimally invasive techniques. The specialists at the Hernia Centre are nationally and internationally renowned as method developers, especially for complex abdominal wall surgeries. Thanks to their membership in relevant professional associations, they are internationally connected and take part in regular scientific exchange.

The Hernia Centre of the Basle-Country Cantonal Hospital is a certified Competence Centre for Hernia Surgery and is therefore subjected to a self-imposed strict quality control. The team around Professor Rosenberg is particularly concerned with the individual care of patients before and after surgeries as well as the close cooperation with general practitioners.
