As joint Senior Consultants on a collegial basis, Dr. med. Angelika Behrens and Dr. med. Vera Stiehr, lead the Dept. for Internal Medicine specialising in gastroenterology, pneumology, diagnostic and interventional endoscopy at the Evangelisch Elisabeth Klinik in Berlin. They have expertise as gastroenterologists in the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas and bile duct system.
Special emphasis is on diagnostic and interventional endoscopy and gastrointestinal oncology. A key pillar of diagnosis and therapy is endoscopy, i.e. direct examination of the affected organs via a tube and high-definition camera within the body. Endoscopy is a very efficient procedure enabling specialists not only to identify the causes of diseases, but also often to directly eliminate them in a minimally invasive manner. Tiny instruments contained in the tube, for instance, enable hollow organs to be widened, haemostasis, removal of tissue samples and shredding of foreign bodies. These examinations usually take place after injection of a sedative, thus ensuring a comfortable and safe examination. The team has particular experience in resolving diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas. In addition to the customary endoscopic examination options such as ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreaticography), direct observation of the pancreatic duct and bile duct together with any combination of endoscopic procedures is available. Furthermore, there is a particular endoscopic emphasis on large or extensive gastrointestinal polyps which can be removed by various techniques.
If a more expansive surgical procedure is required, treatment passes to the Dept. for Abdominal Surgery at the Evangelisch Elisabeth Klinik with which Dr. Stiehr and Dr. Behrens’ internist team are always in close collaboration. There is also interdisciplinary cooperation in the area of oncology: During a regularly held tumour conference specialists from six faculties communicate regarding cancer patients to plan their therapy with the greatest prospects of success. Alongside the focus of expertise on gastroenterology, pneumology is the second key departmental discipline. All the customary diagnostic research methods (lung function testing, BGA) and endoscopic diagnostics (respiratory endoscopy, respiratory sonography with tissue harvesting) and therapy (e.g. obliteration of blood vessels, insertion of stents) are also available here, too. All the patients in the Dept. for Internal Medicine with a focus on gastroenterology, pneumology, diagnostic and interventional endoscopy receive comprehensive internal care with a very broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services extending beyond the two specialist disciplines: conservative cardiology with pacesetter outpatient clinic, dietary medicine and palliative medicine. The Dept. for Internal Medicine also cooperates closely together with the Evangelisch Lungenklinik Berlin and Charité-Universitätsmedizin.
