Dr. Heinz Wehrli is a specialist in surgery (FMH) and has worked as an abdominal surgeon in the treatment of the internal organs for 42 years. He is one of the pioneering greats in his field. The highly qualified expert specializes in the surgical treatment of large intestine, rectal and anal conditions including proctology. This includes benign and malignant conditions in these sections of the intestines. Dr. Wehrli performs surgery with a sure instinct, a high level of professional expertise and invariably, in the process, as gently as possible. Dr. Wehrli also treats chronic inflammatory conditions of the intestines, such as diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, judiciously and with the objective of long-term treatment success. In May 1991, Dr. Wehrli was the first abdominal surgeon in Europe to introduce laparoscopic large intestine surgery as a minimal invasive surgical technique.
At this time, Dr. Wehrli was the lead physician of the surgical department of the Waid City Hospital in Zurich. Following his move to the Wetzikon / Zurich Hospital Center as the Chief Physician of the Department of Surgery, Dr. Wehrli also worked as a university professor of laparoscopic surgery at the University of Strasburg and at the multidisciplinary Swissendos Research and Advanced Training Center in Fribourg in training and advanced training in laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Wehrli also passes his knowledge on as a scientific author, course instructor for a variety of specialist surgery courses and as a member of various Swiss and international specialist associations. Various medical commitments in international development aid round off Dr. Wehrli’s specialized expertise. In 1999, Dr. Wehrli founded the Abdominal Surgery Department at the Hirslanden Hospital in Zurich for major tumor surgery to the internal organs. Together with a colleague, he has been able to continue to expand this center for abdominal surgery. Since that time, the collected specialist knowledge of abdominal surgery specialists has been available for the surgical treatment of tumor conditions of the esophagus, the liver, the stomach, the pancreas, the large intestine and the rectum. The Department is certified as a Center of Excellence (DKG) and thereby attests to the large number of patients treated and the closely networked, interdisciplinary collaboration of its specialists.
The tumor board is one example of this interdisciplinary professional expertise at the Zurich Department of Abdominal Surgery. Here, an individual treatment concept is and discussed planned in the specialist board for each patient. The professional infrastructure has selected advanced apparatuses at the cutting edge of medical technology at its disposal. In Dr. Wehrli and the Zurich Center for Abdominal Surgery of the Hirslanden Hospital, patients will find a highly qualified and experienced specialist with a focus on intestinal conditions in one of the most advanced Swiss private hospitals.
