Neurology is concerned with the medical conditions and treatments of the human nervous system, which includes the brain, the spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system and the musculature. Severe conditions are, for example, tumours, multiple sclerosis and other cerebral inflammations, epilepsy and age-related clinical pictures such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

Prof Dr Röther is a stroke specialist, who deals with both the acute treatment and the prevention of strokes. As a clinician and a scientist, he has published over 250 articles on acute therapy and secondary prevention. He is also a co-publisher of many German and European guidelines. Furthermore, as a neuro-geriatrician, he is specialized in the treatment of dementia and Parkinon’s disease. He also focuses on diagnosing and treating inpatients and outpatients with headaches, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, myasthenia, polyneuropathy, and dementia.

The competencies of the specialist fields of neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology are pooled in the interdisciplinary Neurocenter at the Asklepios Hospital, Altona to provide the patients with comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services. Particularly emergency patients with a CVA, cerebral haemorrhage or an acute paraplegia benefit from this. Neurocenter Altona places a special focus on the treatment of patients with aneurysmal bleedings, angiomas and cerebral fistulas as well as severe neurological emergencies that need to be treated in a neurological intensive care unit.

The nationally certified stroke ward of the Department (Stroke Unit) treats over 1,400 acute CVA patients annually. Here, rapid diagnosis by means of neuroradiology imaging techniques (senior physician: Prof. Eckert) and the immediate re-establishment and stabilisation of the blood flow is crucial to saving the life of the patient.

Modern procedures such as thrombectomy (removal of blood clots from brain arteries with a micro catheter) are performed round the clock. A precise diagnosis is also the ideal way for the treatment of patients without an acute emergency. Here, the experience of all specialists in the Neurocenter, who utilise the most advanced examination techniques in their analysis of the symptoms and the case history, helps to track down the cause of a medical condition.
