Special Clinical Focus
Conditions of the internal organs
Conditions of the upper and lower digestive tract
Conditions of the pancreas, the liver and the biliary tract
Prof. Juergen Pohl, Senior Consultant of the Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Asklepios Hospital, Altona in Hamburg, specialises in conditions affecting the entire digestive tract. This includes dysfunctions, inflammations and, in particular, tumours of the oesophagus, stomach and intestines, the pancreas and liver. Prof. Pohl places particular emphasis on endoscopy: This modern method uses special mini-cameras, which are introduced via the oesophagus by means of a tube and hence, without surgery, and are able to provide high-resolution images directly from inside the body. Using this technique, the tissues can be examined directly and suspicious changes can be detected at an early stage.
But endoscopy not only improves the options for diagnostics: together with other researchers, Prof. Pohl has developed an endoscopic technique, by which the tumours, detected early, can be removed from the healthy tissue in a targeted fashion with the aid of delicate surgical instruments also introduced via the tube. Thus, results comparable to a procedure performed using a scalpel can be achieved with a distinctly lower risk.
Thanks to his successful treatment of several hundred patients with early diagnosed oesophageal tumours, Prof. Pohl has gained a reputation as Germany’s leading expert in his field. He is also a European pioneer in the field of endoscopy in the area of the biliary tract and the pancreas.
Together with the Head of Abdominal Surgery, Prof. Puhl, he has established the interdisciplinary GastroClinic under the umbrella of the Asklepios Hospital, Altona in Hamburg, in which patients are given optimal treatment by experienced internal medical physicians and surgeons, both as out-patients and as in-patients. The core of the collaboration of both specialist areas is diagnosis and joint therapeutic planning: the patients benefit from interdisciplinary clinical case discussions and the extensive experience of both teams.
Thus, thanks to the pooling of the experts of two specialist areas, the medical expertise of the senior hospital staff and the specialist team, as well as outstanding technical facilities, the Asklepios Hospital, Altona provides highly specialised and innovative therapeutic techniques.
