About us

Dr. Kristian Nitschmann is a specialist in surgery and vascular surgery and is the Chief Physician of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the City of Soest Hospital. He is a specialist endovascular surgeon who has been honored by the German Vascular Surgery Association (DGG). The Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery cooperates across the sector with other highly specialized practices and hospitals in the region: the Dr. Steffen and Dr. Grabosch Practice in Soest, the Vascular Surgery Department, under Dr. Fiedler, at the Boerde Clinic in Werl and with the Dr. Selzer Practice in Hagen. The specialists in vascular conditions work in close collaboration and, together with the cardiologist, Professor Achim Meissner, form the regionally organized Westphalian Cardiac and Vascular Center. So, from the initial diagnosis up to the follow-up check, everything can be reliably supplied, ‘under one roof’.

Thanks to the extensive experience of these specialists, its outstanding facilities at the most advanced level of medical technology, the excellent interdisciplinary collaboration of multiple departments, as well as the exemplary documentation of all procedures, the Westphalian Cardiac and Vascular Center has achieved certification by the German Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine Association, the DGG, as a recognized vascular center. For the patients, this means the additional certainty of having turned to the right contact with their medical condition. Thus, the patients at different sites benefit from the considerable expertise and close collaboration of multiple renowned specialized physicians. In the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the City of Soest Hospital, moreover, the cross-departmental collaboration of specialists in internal medicine in the field of cardiology and angiology, as well as wound healing is a great advantage. This multiprofessional cooperation guarantees that the patient is supported by continuous care, from the initial examination to discharge from the hospital. Thus, the competent support of the treatment facilitates ongoing treatment success. In the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, the specialists treat all conditions of the blood vessels, both of the extremities and of the large, central blood vessels.

These include severe diagnoses such as constricted carotid arteries (carotid artery stenosis), abdominal aortic aneurysm and deep vein thrombosis of the leg, as well as diagnoses, which can severely impair the quality of life of the affected patient, such as chronic occlusion disease (PAOD, also referred to as Charcot’s syndrome) and varicose veins, which many people, particularly in the summer months, regard as a blemish. One important treatment focus of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm. For patients who also suffer from an aneurysm in the thoracic area, this frequently means multiple catheter procedures or hazardous open surgery. Under the leadership of Dr. Nitschmann, however, the hospital has established a new technique, in which the procedure is performed minimal invasively via the inguinal and axillary arteries. As a result, major, open surgery is no longer required. Special wound therapy is also a focus of the vascular surgery specialists. Hence, the treatment of diabetic foot also falls within their range of responsibility.
