Dr. Mumme treats adults as well as children and adolescents and offers innovative solutions for a variety of orthopedic challenges. His clinical career is characterized by his many years of experience in cartilage and regenerative knee surgery. Before joining the Sportclinic Zurich, Dr. Mumme was Head of Cartilage Surgery and Regenerative Knee Surgery at the University Hospital Basel and Head of Sports Orthopedics at the University Children's Hospital Basel from 2019 to 2024. In this position, he carried out pioneering research projects and established modern treatment methods that received worldwide attention. He has made significant contributions to the development and refinement of cartilage regeneration techniques, including the use of cartilage tissue from the nasal septum as a transplant material, an innovative method that will hopefully improve the treatment of cartilage damage that was previously difficult to treat.
His expertise covers a wide range of treatment methods, from conservative therapies to complex surgical procedures. He specializes in minimally invasive, arthroscopic and open knee joint surgery, including the treatment of meniscal injuries, cruciate ligament and collateral ligament injuries as well as reconstructive ligamentoplasty. Dr. Mumme also offers specialized therapies for patients with patellar instability, such as ligament reinforcements, trochleoplasties and osteotomies. His extensive knowledge of cartilage regeneration and joint preservation enables him to help patients with advanced osteoarthritis by using joint-preserving surgery and modern therapeutic approaches such as corrective leg axis surgery and cartilage regenerative therapies. Dr. Mumme has also made a name for himself in the treatment of special knee pathologies in children and adolescents. He deals with growth-related problems, rotational corrections and the treatment of patellar malalignment. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mumme also plays a key role in scientific research. He is actively involved in international research projects on the treatment of cartilage defects and osteoarthritis, both at the University of Basel and at the Sportclinic Zurich. Through his membership of leading scientific societies, he contributes significantly to the further development of his specialist field and is committed to the exchange of knowledge and innovation at a global level.
The Sportclinic Zurich, where Dr. Mumme now works, was founded in 1999 by former national soccer goalkeeper Roger Berbig. Berbig's vision was to create a clinic that would provide athletes with the highest level of medical care while also offering human support. Originally focusing on the treatment of professional athletes, the Sportclinic Zurich has since developed into one of the leading orthopedic clinics in Switzerland, treating not only athletes but also a broad section of the population.
The Sportclinic Zurich is characterized not only by its excellent medical care, but also by its role as a recognized training centre for orthopedic surgery. At this state-of-the-art facility, Dr. Mumme works with a team of specialists dedicated to the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The clinic offers state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques and treatment procedures that benefit athletes and non-athletes alike.
