As Senior Consultant, Prof. Martin Reck has been the head of the Department of Oncology at the Grosshansdorf Lung Clinic since 2011. The Department specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and after-care of the entire range of malignant conditions of the thorax. These include, in particular, carcinoma of the lung (lung cancer), which is responsible for most deaths due to cancer in Germany, and pleural mesothelioma (cancer of the pleura), a rare tumour, originating in the pleura, which is caused by asbestos in approximately 85 per cent of cases.
At the Department of Oncology of the Grosshansdorf Lung Clinic, patients have access to the most up-to-date treatment, including treatment within the framework of clinical studies. Here, the therapeutic service portfolio of Prof. Reck and his team includes, above all, medication-based tumour treatment such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and so-called Targeted Therapy, as well as local interventional techniques such as stent implantation and laser tumour ablation. There is also close co-operation with the collaborating departments and partners in the Departments of Thoracic Surgery and Radiotherapy, which, within the context of interdisciplinary tumour conferences, facilitates the development of individual, multimodal treatment plans for the patients.
Palliative medicine, for patients with very advanced, inoperative cancer conditions, is also a part of the service portfolio of the Grosshansdorf Lung Clinic, which has its own, interdisciplinary Palliative Care Ward. The main objective of this multi-professional, palliative medical care is to enable critically ill patients to enjoy as good a quality of life as possible, without pain or respiratory distress.
The Department of Oncology at the Grosshansdorf Lung Clinic meets the highest quality standards and has long-standing and comprehensive experience in the diagnosis, treatment and after-care of patients with pulmonary cancer conditions. Thanks to the wide specialist expertise of Prof. Reck and his team, the specialised spatial and technical facilities of a specialist lung clinic and regular quality management, the Department was also granted the distinction as a certified Lung Cancer Centre by the German Cancer Association in 2012.
As an important unit of the Grosshansdorf Lung Clinic, the Grosshansdorf Lung Cancer Centre is among the first certified centres of this type in Germany and is also the only certified lung cancer centre in the Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein region. The certificate stands for the most up-to-date diagnostics and treatment, interdisciplinary treatment techniques, comprehensive care of lung cancer patients in all phases of their condition and high quality results. The centre was re-certified by the German Cancer Association in December 2015.
All medication-based tumour treatments and after-care examinations, as well as the required diagnostics for tumour conditions of the thorax, can be performed in the Thoracic Oncology Out-patients’ Clinic after arranging an appointment and referral by your GP or specialist.
