In June 2017, an announcement attracted attention far beyond Munich: The ISAR Hospital introduced a new director of the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery - and with Dr. Matthias Hoppert, the clinic was able to present a particularly experienced specialist, who has a great international reputation, especially in the areas of knee and shoulder.
Dr. Matthias Hoppert is a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery and therefore familiar with the entire musculoskeletal system. With the previously acquired additional qualification in sports medicine, he also knows exactly how movement, training and sport affect the body at every age - and what consequences a lack of movement has for prevention and rehabilitation.
Certified knee specialist
While still a medical student, Dr. Hoppert began to focus on exactly two joints: the knee and the shoulder. As a knee specialist for meniscus injuries and cruciate ligament ruptures, he has acquired a high level of expertise - and is very familiar with all types of cartilage damage. His diagnoses are also valued in cases of osteoarthritis of the knee joint and patella..
Anyone who comes to Dr. Matthias Hoppert for treatment of knee pain will meet a specialist who, as a knee surgeon certified by the German Knee Society (DKG), knows every little detail of the knee. He is also a proven specialist in cases of patella instability - for example, when the patella dislocation causes the kneecap to spring out of its socket.
High expertise from shoulder to elbow
The second joint which Dr. Hoppert has always focused on is the shoulder: Whether it is a dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint, a broken collarbone, painful joint separations or a dislocated shoulder - patients in the Bavarian capital trust him. Even in the case of very specific diseases and injuries of the shoulder, the experienced specialist is considered an outstanding point of contact: Anyone who suffers from a calcerous shoulder or has his shoulder roof jammed is in the right place with Dr. Hoppert - as is, of course, anyone suffering from osteoarthritis in the shoulder. And the specialist has just as much knowledge on the subject of "frozen shoulder syndrome".
Inflammations of the biceps tendon, which usually affect the upper base of the muscle, also falls within his area of expertise. Although they are common, they are difficult to treat. This also concerns the area of the elbow. It is therefore only fitting that Dr. Matthias Hoppert has been certified as a shoulder and elbow surgeon by the German Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (DVSE).
Priority joint preservation
Whether it concerns the shoulder or the knee: Dr. Hoppert's top priority is always the preservation of the joints - whether by conservative means or by surgical intervention. However, if this is no longer possible, patients can rely on his extensive experience in endoprosthetics: When it comes to artificial joints, Dr. Hoppert always knows the most innovative methods.
This is also reflected in his active involvement in networks and the high reputation he enjoys among international colleagues as a long-standing member of the German Society of Endoprosthetics (AE) and the International Society for Cartilage Therapy and Joint Maintenance (ICRS). Here, colleagues from all over the world also like to draw from his expertise in revision endoprosthetics - in other words, when it comes to replacing artificial joints or adapting them to the latest state of prosthetics.
International reputation: Member of several professional societies
Among the international professional societies that feature his membership are the Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery (AGA) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). It is therefore no surprise that Dr. Matthias Hoppert is regularly in demand as a speaker at national and international congresses. As part of his various university and clinical activities, the renowned specialist has also published numerous scientific articles in specialist journals.
As a former professional athlete, Dr. Hoppert knows from his own experience how important functioning joints are and how injuries to the joints can affect the quality of life. In the 1981/1982 season, in the second German football league, he kept the goal of the Bayreuth soccer club five times, but then concentrated on his medical studies at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Another field of experience: sports traumatology
So it is obvious that he has been very interested in sports traumatology from the very beginning - and today he is often consulted by athletes of all levels, even when it comes to training plans and rehabilitation measures. As a member of the German Association for the Study of Osteosynthesis Trauma (AOTD), he also frequently draws on his specialization, for which he has completed several international fellowships: in the USA, England and Switzerland.
Before Dr. Matthias Hoppert took over the management of the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at the ISAR Hospital Munich, he was the Medical Director of the "Practice for Shoulder and Knee Surgery Munich", but also acted as a consultant physician for orthopedic surgery at the Sana Clinic Munich and the Starnberg Hospital. At the ISAR Hospital he now leads a highly competent team of orthopedic surgeons, trauma surgeons and specialised nurses with many years of experience, who have dedicated themselves to their tasks with absolute passion for science and research. Dr. Hoppert's interdisciplinary approach also plays an important role in the clinic: Specialists in radiology, neurosurgery and pain therapy are available within short distances, and Dr. Hoppert's team also works closely together with the departments of orthopedic technology and physiotherapy.
The latest medical technology equipment, which Dr. Matthias Hoppert found at the Munich hospital, also spoke in favor of his move to act as director here. This enables him to carry out minimally invasive surgeries at the highest international level, which allow his patients to be quickly free of pain and leave only tiny scars.
