About us

The demands that people place on their own mobility today have changed fundamentally. One reason why leading an active, sporty life into old age has become a matter of course lies in the development of high-performance medicine – and here especially in modern sports orthopaedics. An outstanding example of a pioneering institution that makes innovative treatment concepts from top-class sport accessible to everyone lies in Vienna: the Sports Orthopaedics Centre, which perfectly combines renowned orthopaedic surgeons, highly trained therapists and state-of-the-art treatment methods. The high standard is guaranteed by the expert team led by Dr Ulrich Lanz, IOC Dip Sp Phy.

When it comes to the intensive treatment of actively mobile individuals, the Sports Orthopaedics Centre in Hietzing has a reputation that extends far beyond Vienna. The renowned private consultant practice in the west of the Austrian capital is regarded by numerous professional athletes as the first port of call not only for sports injuries, but also for diseases and injuries of the entire musculoskeletal system. From the shoulder to the foot – the Sports Orthopaedics Centre offers sports surgery at the highest level in every area.

The often innovative treatment methods are always oriented to the demands of professional sport. Clearly everything has been thought of here, and topics such as physiotherapy and nutritional advice are not neglected. One look at the list of doctors is enough to see that there are several successful former professional athletes here who have also won medals for Austria in various national teams. No wonder, then, that they also strive for top performance in medicine.

High-performance medicine for mobility

With innovative therapy methods that also include osteopathy, the top-class network treats all kinds of chronic as well as acute injuries caused by sports or leisure time accidents. Those who have enjoyed moving all their lives naturally also often develop complaints resulting from physical wear and tear, which can manifest themselves through arthrosis or through chronic overloading.

Those who turn to the experienced team at the Sports Orthopaedics Centre with complaints or restrictions in freedom of movement will feel right from the first clarification in the detailed doctor-patient discussion that, here, empathy and expertise complement each other – and can be sure from the start that the individual therapy plan is focussed towards their personal needs every step of the way. This is also because experts in physiotherapy are also typically involved in sophisticated therapy planning alongside the relevant specialists for the illness or injury. That, after all, is the philosophy in Hietzing: only in this way is optimal treatment possible – and with the high demand for the shortest possible rehabilitation time. Because whatever therapy innovations have been developed for professional athletes, all patients benefit from them at the Sports Orthopaedics Centre.

Nothing is left to chance at the Sports Orthopaedics Centre. This includes comprehensive preparation for the operation, while individual physiotherapy begins directly after the operation – precise, balanced and always targeted. Follow-up examinations are also carried out competently, of course. The modern treatment concepts – aimed at a quick return to ideally unrestricted mobility – include innovative laser therapy and shock wave therapy, with which the specialists in Vienna achieve very good results. The particularly mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also used to enable a faster recovery process.

Thanks to the international network and the experience from countless successful operations, the Viennese specialists around Dr Lanz are familiar with practically all state-of-the-art methods in physiotherapy and osteopathy. Many athletes have already learned to appreciate the personalised blood flow-reduced training, which is combined for example with specially developed build-up preparations. Autologous blood treatments and infiltrations are also carried out in sports orthopaedics.

The team – proven specialists for the entire musculoskeletal system:

Dr Ulrich Lanz, IOC Dip Sp Phy, is a specialist in orthopaedics, orthopaedic surgery and sports orthopaedics. The former Austrian national ice hockey player is one of the country's most renowned specialists for shoulder surgery and sports orthopaedics. The expert, who specialises in conservative and surgical treatments of shoulder injuries and diseases, performs hundreds of shoulder operations every year. Thanks to his international training, he belongs to the select group of surgeons who focus on arthroscopic and open techniques in shoulder surgery. He also looks after numerous national teams – such as the Austrian national athletics team and the Davis Cup team.

Senior physician Ass. Lect. DDr Reinhard Schuh is an expert in orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery, specialising in surgical and conservative treatment of the foot and ankle. He attracted a great deal of attention in the specialist world when, before completing his specialist training at the Medical University of Vienna, he became the youngest orthopaedic surgeon at the time to qualify as a university lecturer. He is a member of numerous professional associations such as the European Society of Sports and the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS). He is also considered an expert in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, holding diplomas in sports medicine and manual medicine. He has published numerous books and book chapters in his specialist field of the foot and ankle.

Senior physician Dr Christian Thomas Radda, specialist in orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery, has accrued expertise in hand and elbow surgery, with an additional field of rheumatology. He is very familiar with competitive sports – as a former national team player and Austrian national rugby champion, he knows what kind of stress the musculoskeletal system can be exposed to. The certified hand surgeon, who holds a specialisation diploma from the Austrian Medical Association, among other things, is always passionate about his work – also as team doctor for the Austrian national rugby team.

Dr Lukas Panzenböck, specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology, has devoted himself to all manner of problems relating to the spine. Thanks to his enormous international networking with other experts and his activities in several specialist societies, he always stays at the cutting edge of developments in practice and research. He has also made a name for himself internationally through his extensive teaching and lecturing activities – for example, as a training representative of the European Spine Society for surgeons within the framework of the European Spine Diploma. His field of research, which also receives international funding, includes infections and their therapy in spinal surgery.

Dr Sebastian Leder-Berg is the hip expert at the Sports Orthopaedics Centre: as a consultant in orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery, he is not only an absolute specialist in conservative and surgical hip treatments, but has also caused a sensation internationally with minimally invasive joint replacements. He also gained his various training qualifications abroad, for example in Japan and the USA. As a triathlete who belongs to the illustrious circle of finishers of the legendary “Ironman”, he knows the stresses and strains that sports place on joints. He also appears time and again with scientific lectures at international congresses in faraway countries.

Patients at the Sports Orthopaedics Centre in Vienna's Hietzing district can therefore rely on the best possible care for injuries and diseases of the entire musculoskeletal system. In addition, the entire team around Dr Lanz has an extensive network of therapists and other specialists at its disposal, who in turn support the expertise and experience of the consultants with a great deal of know-how. Whether it is radiologists, physiotherapists or specialists from other disciplines – the high-performance physicians in Vienna always attend to the comprehensive and professional care of their patients. Before the intervention, directly afterwards – and naturally also in the excellent aftercare. And of course, all specialists at the Sports Orthopaedics Centre are also on hand with advice and support when a highly professional second opinion is required for existing diagnosis or therapy planning – this always based on the current state of modern medical development.

  • Of particular importance for treatment and therapy success is the interdisciplinary approach through which the specialists at the Sports Orthopaedics Centre provide optimal care. Because a professional, excellently structured network in Hietzing always ensures that absolute experts come into play for every detail, no matter how small - for example, in collaboration with radiologists or in physiotherapy. This approach makes the individual therapy plans so unique, because they are based on a constant exchange between doctor, therapist and patient. Incidentally, this is also reflected in the rehabilitation times, which are exceptionally short as a result. To ensure that the best results are always achieved, the all-round care before and after the surgeries takes place in the participating hospitals as well as directly in the Sports Orthopaedics Centre.
