About us

The Helios Klinikum Emil von Behring GmbH Department of Pneumonology, Heckeshorn Chest Clinic in Berlin-Zehlendorf is one of the leading facilities for lung conditions across Europe. The Heckeshorn Chest Clinic, named after the Heckeshorn Peninsula on the Greater Wannsee, was founded as a tuberculosis hospital on the Wannsee in 1947 and has been a part of the Helios Emil von Behring Hospital since 2004. In 2009, it was certified by the German Cancer Association as the first lung cancer center in Germany. Prof. Torsten Bauer, specialist in pneumonology / allergology, internal medicine, infectology, allergology and sleep medicine, has been the Chief Physician of the Department, which is renowned for its outstanding expertise, above all in the diagnosis and treatment of the lung condition, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), since 2006. In 2016 and 2018, 3000 licensed physicians were surveyed by the Berliner Zeitung and the Tagesspiegel about top physicians – here, the lung specialist at the Emil von Behring Hospital took first place. The Department incorporates the Center for Sleep and Respiratory Medicine, a palliative care ward, a contact point for the in-patient and out-patient care of patients with tuberculosis and non-tubercular mycobacterioses, a central contact point for out-patients and the regional counseling center for patients with tumors of the respiratory organs (tumor counseling). With its own immunology laboratory, infectology is among its further specialist fields. The range of treatment also includes allergology, the diagnosis and treatment of pleural effusions and pulmonary fibroses, as well as more rare pulmonary conditions such as sarcoidosis or Langerhans cell histiocytosis. In order to ensure the optimal treatment, the Department, in an interdisciplinary approach, collaborates with cardiologists, thoracic surgeons, radiologists and intensive care physicians and provides a comprehensive prevention, diagnostic and therapeutic range. The Department of Thoracic Surgery, itself a certified Thoracic Center, is part of the renowned Heckeshorn Chest Clinic. As a result, first-class surgical care can be given to COPD patients. What surgical or endoscopic measures are possible for the patient are specified jointly. Physical Therapy and lung sports groups are provided for the patients in the clinic in Zehlendorf. Quit smoking courses can also be attended. Nutrition counseling and contact with a variety of support groups complete the range of services. The lung specialist Prof. Dr. Bauer is the General Secretary of the German Central Committee for the Control of Tuberculosis (DZK) and was appointed a member of the “Antiinfectives, Resistance and Treatment” Committee (ART) at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin until 2019. Prof. Bauer has led the Program Committee of the German Pneumonology Association (DGP e.V.) since 2018. The Helios Emil von Behring Hospital is one of the most advanced medical centers in southwest Berlin. The hospital was formed by the amalgamation of three renowned Berlin hospitals, the Oskar Helene Home, the Heckeshorn Pulmonary Hospital and the Behring Hospital. The physicians treat approximately 25,000 in-patients, as well as approximately 55,000 out-patients annually.
