During his long career at leading university hospitals (Bochum, Würzburg, Münster) in Germany, Prof. Mittelkötter acquired extensive expertise and established himself as a specialist in minimally invasive surgery as well as complex operations in the field of hernia, thyroid and tumor surgery. He completed his training at Bochum-Langendreer University Hospital, where he qualified as a specialist in surgery in 1996. His extensive experience in the field of pancreatic and thyroid/parathyroid surgery as well as his research on postoperative infections and sepsis in intestinal surgery shaped his further career and led him to the Surgical University Hospital in Würzburg, where he habilitated in 2001. In the years that followed, he took on important management positions, including deputy director of the Pancreas Center Bochum at the Catholic Clinic Bochum - St. Josef Hospital - under Prof. W. Uhl and then the position of chief physician at the Katharinenhospital Unna, where he established and managed the Thyroid and Parathyroid Center. The clinic also owes the establishment of the Pancreas Center to his expertise, so that this experience is now being continued at the Hemer site. His scientific contributions and memberships in prestigious specialist societies, such as the German Society of Surgery (DGCH) and the German Society of General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV), underline his leading role in German surgery. He has been named Top Doctor in the fields of endocrine surgery and hernia surgery several times in a row since 2021 and has founded several centers of excellence during his career, including for hernia surgery, thyroid surgery, coloproctology and minimally invasive surgery.
The DGD Stadtklinik Hemer, to which Prof. Dr. Mittelkötter transferred as Chief Physician of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery in 2024 after more than 17 years as Chief Physician in Unna, offers a wide range of surgical and medical services at a high level. For decades, the Stadtklinik has been the central emergency hospital for Hemer and the surrounding region and guarantees comprehensive, holistic patient care through close cooperation with the university clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum, St. Josef Hospital, other specialist clinics such as the DGD Lungenfachklinik Hemer and local doctors. The clinic is particularly known for its family atmosphere and dedicated teamwork, which is supported by all employees. With around 300 highly qualified employees, the clinic provides emergency care around the clock and operates a certified endoprosthetics center, among other things.
Prof. Mittelkötter attaches great importance to the personal care and individual treatment of patients, particularly with regard to surgical interventions in the treatment of thyroid diseases, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the colon and complex hernias. With his in-depth specialist knowledge and many years of experience, he makes a significant contribution to further expanding the high medical standard of the Stadtklinik Hemer and offering patients in the region outstanding care in cooperation with Bochum University Hospital.
