About us

Oral surgery comprises the complete spectrum of surgical interventions in the mouth and jaw regions which can be treated on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthetic. The main emphasis today is surgical implantology (insertion of artificial roots into the jawbone for further treatment with dental crowns or prostheses as well as bone reconstruction if needed). We are able to apply three dimensional imaging methods which enable image-guided implantology. Classic oral surgery comprises the surgical removal of teeth, especially displaced teeth such as wisdom teeth, the resection of root ends and the removal of cysts in the soft tissue and the bone. The removal of benign tumors or the tissue sampling in suspicion of malignant tumors are established interventions in this field. Furthermore, we offer treatment of disorders concerning the gingiva and the oral mucosa. The specialty also comprises the invasive treatment of maxillary sinus disorders which are caused by dental problems, the surgical treatment of disorders of the small salivary glands and the invasive treatment of infections.

The Department of Oral Surgery, Oral Radiology and Oral Medicine is equipped with the complete necessary infrastructure (specially trained personnel, aseptic operating rooms, complete surgical instruments, possibility of surgery under premedication, intraoperative sedation, monitoring as well as intubation treatment for general anesthetic on outpatient basis). By the use of an operating microscope, treatments at micro-surgical level can be carried out (e.g. apicoectomies with retrograde ultrasound preparation or perineural removal of foreign bodies). Rigid and flexible endoscopes permit interventions with small incisions, the CO2-laser is suitable for the complete spectrum of soft tissue surgery in the oral cavity. Additionally, we offer a micro-camera for direct transmission to a monitor in the operating room as well as to the lecture halls of the University Hospital of Dental Medicine or for transmission for national or international advanced training courses and conferences.
