If a tooth is severely damaged, a shell can be placed over it, which experts refer to as a crown. Various materials and processing techniques are available for this. Esthetic dentistry works primarily with ceramic and electroformed crowns.
The standard crown is made of metal and is veneered with a ceramic layer. The dental technician matches the color of the ceramic to the natural dentition. The crown is bonded to the tooth with a special cement, which has to be ground down considerably.
However, a metal edge remains. It may be visible, especially if the gums recede a little over the years. In aesthetic dentistry, it is therefore recommended that the edge of the crown is also veneered. This is called a ceramic shoulder.

An alternative is the all-ceramic crown. The color and surface structure can be precisely adapted to the requirements of aesthetic dentistry . In addition, the material reflects incident light in a similar way to natural teeth so that the crown cannot be seen even on an anterior tooth.
In addition to normal ceramic crowns, zirconium oxide ceramics are also used in aesthetic dentistry. They are particularly durable, but must also be veneered to achieve a natural effect.
Ceramics do not only have optical advantages for aesthetic dentistry. The bonding technique used to attach the crowns (adhesive technique) means that the tooth is hardly ground down. This means that more healthy tooth substance is preserved than with a conventional metal crown.
In the case of very extensive damage, the specialist first rebuilds the tooth with the composite material mixture. It can then be crowned. This combination should also be able to withstand long-term chewing pressure.
Another option is the electroformed crown. This is a ceramic crown with a wafer-thin gold cap. The cap is on the inside and results in a very precise fit. This avoids a gap through which bacteria could get under the crown.
The ceramic outer part of the crown is in turn matched to the dentition in terms of color and surface. Experts in esthetic dentistry often recommend this combination of materials.
Allergy sufferers need not fear any reactions. In aesthetic dentistry, ceramic and electroplating can be used not only for crowns but also for complete bridges
