In the last 15 years, the Oral Surgery and Stomatology Clinic of the University of Berne has developed into an international centre of competence in oral implantology. Under the leadership of Prof. Daniel Buser, this specialist clinic provides the best conditions in which to give our patients the best possible care. This care is guaranteed by an excellent infrastructure within the clinic, a surgical wing equipped with the latest technology and a radiology suite with the most advanced DVT equipment currently available at its disposal.
Prof. Daniel Buser and his consultants all have many years of experience in the field of oral surgery / implant surgery. Prof. Buser himself has worked in this field for over 30 years and is very experienced. Thus, this established specialist in implant surgery routinely carries out complex and difficult implant procedures. Here, he regularly utilises the GBR technique to optimise the aesthetic results or the sinus lift technique in the maxillary posterior dental region.
The excellent results achieved by the implant specialists at the University of Berne using these up to date procedures and techniques have been documented in long-term studies. Prof. Buser’s team has been able to publish very good results, even after 10 and 20 years, in leading international journals. According to a current study, the failure rate is under two per cent for patients with a normal risk profile. Together with Prof. Buser’s convincing results in implantology, the other treatment emphases of the Clinic also speak in favour of the long-standing and extensive experience in the field of oral surgery and implant surgery in Berne. As well as tooth replacement using implants, the specialist treatment emphases of the clinic in Berne include root apex resection by Prof. Thomas von Arx and the treatment of dentogenic cysts in the jaw region.
Another treatment emphasis at the Clinic is in the field of stomatology, which covers the entire oral mucosa and the diseases of the oral mucosa. Here, Asst Lect. Dr Michael Bornstein is the group's top specialist. The oral cavity is a point of intersection, which is important to many dental specialists and implantology experts such as Prof. Buser. Stomatology is a classic field, in which interdisciplinary collaboration is particularly important.
Radiological diagnostics in dentistry has taken off in the last 10 years thanks to the major advances in Digital Volume Tomography (DVT). The DVT technique allows high-quality 3-D analysis with, at the same time, considerably reduced radiation exposure in comparison with the dental CT, which was used in the 1990s. Hence, the radiology ward of the zmk bern is by far the most active radiological dental centre in Switzerland.
