Implantologists - Further information

When can a dentist call himself an "implantology specialist"?

The term "implantologist" is not a protected title. In principle, any dentist may place dental implants.

As dental implantations can be very demanding, the dentist should have one or more additional training courses in the field of dental implantology. Many years of experience as an implantologist is also very important in this context.

Dentists and specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral surgery and orthodontics can specialize in dental implantology.

State dental associations, scientific societies or recognized institutes offer certified advanced training courses.

The guidelines and requirements for a doctor to be able to call themselves a specialist in dental implantology can vary.

In general, however, a dentist who calls themselves an oral implant specialist or implantology expert must demonstrate certified training, skills and experience.

For example, before a dentist can officially call themselves a specialist in dental implantology or an implantology expert, they must have worked as an implantologist for at least three years and have performed a minimum number (> 200) of dental implants during this time.

As every dentist is allowed to insert implants, you should also pay attention to practical experience and further training in addition to the subjective assessment.

What quality standards and certifications are there in dental implantology?

All dentists, specialist dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons working in implantology should be certified in implantology.

Specialist societies, professional associations and universities offer a wide range of certifications and training courses for dentists.

For example, a dentist can complete advanced training in the field of dental implantology with the following professional societies and associations:

In Germany:

  • German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DGMKG)
  • German Society for Dental Implantology (DGZI)

Dentists and orthodontists who wish to gain special expertise must obtain further qualifications from a specialist society or professional association.

Alternatively, they can complete a Master's degree at a university or college. Implant manufacturers and private institutes or practices also offer further training opportunities.
