Implantable contact lenses are also known as intraocular contact lenses or ICLs (implantable contact lenses) for short . They make it possible to live without glasses and contact lenses and are a refractive surgery procedure.
Doctors insert the implantable contact lens during a short outpatient procedure. In this way, most visual defects such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism can be corrected easily and successfully.
With the implantable contact lens (ICL), doctors insert a contact lens between the iris and the lens of the eye during eye surgery. The outpatient implantation is a procedure that has been used for 15 years. It is used for specific visual defects where other eye operations such as LASIK do not offer a solution.
Special implantable contact lens: Visian ICL
The Visian ICL implantable contact lens is an additional lens like the contact lens. In contrast to the contact lens, doctors insert the Visian ICL into the eye. It does not remain on the corneal surface.
This special lens is soft and small. Doctors place it in front of the natural lens. The Visian ICL implantable contact lens can correct short-sightedness and long-sightedness. The so-called Visian ICL toric also corrects astigmatism. Doctors worldwide insert an intraocular contact lens every 6 minutes.

Material of an intraocular contact lens
The Visian ICL intraocular contact lens is made of a material called Collamer. Collamer has a number of special properties such as good tolerance.
The body accepts the material and does not perceive it as a foreign body. Therefore, there is no rejection reaction. The Collamer material also stands for optical clarity, durability and flexibility.
Specially trained technical staff and the surgeon will examine your eyes in detail before inserting an implantable contact lens.
The pain-free examinations usually take around two to three hours.
For example
- visual acuity is measured
- the intraocular pressure is determined and
- the corneal topography and anterior chamber depth are determined
In addition, doctors measure the eye to calculate the strength of the contact lens. Depending on the level of astigmatism, special toric artificial lenses compensate for it.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various options with your surgeon.
Further examinations with a slit lamp and magnifying glass will provide decisive information as to whether the insertion of an implantable contact lens is possible. Which procedure is used is also the subject of the examinations.
During the preliminary examination, it is possible to determine how much your vision will improve with an intraocular contact lens.
Only after these examinations can the doctor give you a recommendation for the operation.
This is the case if:
- No other eye diseases are present
- Vision improvement is possible with an implantable contact lens
The Visian ICL implantable contact lens is small and malleable. Doctors can therefore roll them up and insert them through a small opening within seconds.
As soon as the Visian ICL is in the eye, it unfolds and positions itself between the iris and the natural lens. It remains there and corrects your visual defect without the need for further surgery.
Using the same procedure, doctors can remove or replace the Visian ICL implantable contact lens if necessary. This is a reversible procedure.

Before implantation, you will be given a drip anesthetic and a mild sedative so that you do not feel anything during the procedure.
The individual steps involved in implanting an intraocular contact lens:
- First, the doctor makes a small incision of 2 to 3 mm at the edge of the cornea (corneal incision).
- He then fills your eye with a gel-like substance
- He then implants the Visian ICL
- He then carefully places the contact lens behind the iris
- Finally, he removes the gel-like substance from the eye
The small incision is a self-healing wound, so suturing is not necessary. Implantation is an outpatient procedure and only takes a few minutes.
You should behave as usual before the operation. Do not change your diet or therapy and take your medication as usual.
If you are taking Marcumar or other anticoagulants, please consult your family doctor. You will need to take anti-inflammatory eye drops after the operation. Your surgeon will discuss with you how often and for how long you will need them.
The following complications are possible:
- Infections of the eye with the possibility of severe and most severe impairment up to loss of vision of the eye
- Increased sensitivity to light and glare, possibly permanent
- Reduced visual acuity at night, possibly permanently
- Over- or undercorrection with the need for further surgery or corrective lenses
If you are over 40 years old, you may need reading glasses after the operation
The first check-up generally takes place in the clinic the day after the operation. The doctor will discuss the use of eye drops with you. These should be dripped into the operated eye for about two weeks. He will also explain to you when you should wear protective goggles.
In the first few days, you will often experience itching or scratching. You will also experience some blurred vision at first, especially immediately after the operation. This is normal as the pupil is still wide. Neither watching television nor reading will harm your eyes.
After one or two days, patients often achieve quite good visual acuity. You should achievestable visual acuity within a month.
Only when the doctor gives you the green light can you drive again.
Schedule further check-ups after one week and one month. The final examination usually takes place 2 to 3 months after the procedure. Later, these take place as part of the routine eye examinations.
The advantages of the Visian ICL are
- Large correction range
- Quick achievement of visual acuity
- Painless healing phase
- Permanently stable results
The Visian ICL implantable contact lens is invisible and cannot be recognized by others. During implantation, it is irrelevant whether you have a thin cornea, dry eyes or large pupils.
