Chin correction - Further information

Chin correction for a double chin

A double chin is usually caused by being overweight. Fatty tissue accumulates on the chin. In most cases, the person also has a relatively strong neck and a round face.

However, even slim people can have a double chin, which is usually due to a genetic disposition. With increasing age, the skin slackens so that flaps of skin can hang down in the chin area.

Medicine offers various procedures to remove a double chin. Which method is best depends on whether the double chin is caused by excess skin or fat deposits.

A specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery can remove excess fatty tissue in the chin area with liposuction. In most cases, this is performed on an outpatient basis. The surgeon performs this procedure behind the earlobes so that there are hardly any scars.

A newer method is the so-called fat removal injection. The doctor injects a special substance into the fatty tissue, which then dissolves the fat. The fat is then removed via the lymph.

If the double chin is due to sagging skin flaps, the surgeon can also perform a skin tightening procedure. The surgeon then makes a small incision under the chin and removes the excess skin. This procedure is also usually performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis.

The removal of a double chin gives your neck and face a slim and fresh appearance again. Your chin area will also appear narrower.

Sagging chin and possible corrections

A receding chin is a weakly developed chin, which makes the nose and mouth appear protruding.

There are various causes for this: on the one hand, it can be due to the lower jaw, which is shifted backwards, making the chin appear small and falling back.

It may also be that the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw. The chin then appears less prominent.

To correct this, the surgeon must enlarge the chin. An implant can be used for this.

This consists of either:

  • plastic
  • silicone or
  • the body's own material

To insert the implant, the surgeon makes an incision in the mouth or under the chin. He then inserts it on the inside of the lower lip.

Another method of augmentation is jaw displacement, although this is rarely used. To do this, the doctor cuts the lower jawbone horizontally and moves it forward. As soon as it is in the correct position, it is fixed in place with plates and screws.

Another option for correction is a fracture of the jawbone. This requires the surgeon to break the jaw. The surgeon then moves the jaw forward and fixes it in place.

A receding chin is usually stressful for those affected. However, it can be easily corrected, making the facial features clearer again.

Chin reduction for protruding chins

A protruding chin is very pronounced and can protrude beyond the forehead and nose. Aesthetic surgery uses various methods to correct this.

One possible procedure to reduce a protruding chin is to grind down the jawbone. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

The surgeon removes bone substance from the chin area using a bone cutter. He can then shape it into the desired form.

Another procedure is jaw repositioning. Here, the doctor removes the lower jaw bone and moves the jaw backwards.

A protruding chin looks very masculine and striking on women and hard and severe on men. A chin reduction makes the facial features softer and friendlier.

Alternatives to chin surgery

If you don't want to undergo surgery, you can also visually enlarge your chin with fillers. Hyaluronic acid is often used for this purpose.

Deformities and asymmetries can also be corrected with hyaluronic acid injections. In most cases, patients need several sessions to achieve a satisfactory result.

Chin augmentation with hyaluronic acid lasts between one and two years, after which the treatment must be repeated.

Patient behavior after a chin correction

If the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, you can return home once the anesthetic has worn off.

The following symptoms often occur after a chin lift:

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Bruising or
  • swelling

These are harmless and subside after a few days.

In the case of extensive surgery, the recovery period may take several weeks. During this time, you should cool the painful or swollen areas or take pain-relieving medication.

Eating and speech difficulties are also normal in the first few days after the operation. You should therefore stick to soft foods such as soups or puree.

To avoid infections, you should maintain good oral hygiene. You can resume sports activities about four to five weeks after the operation .

Costs of a chin correction

The costs for a chin correction are individual and depend on the amount of correction required and the shape of the chin.

A chin augmentation with hyaluronic acid is relatively inexpensive and costs around 120 euros. However, this procedure must be repeated, as hyaluronic acid does not last permanently.

The cost of an operation is between 1,900 and 4,900 euros. If several operations or special implants are necessary, the costs can also increase.

If there is a functional jaw disorder that leads to problems with chewing or speaking, the health insurance company will cover the costs. However, you will have to pay for purely aesthetic operations yourself.
