Dermabrasion - Further information

Acne scars make looking in the mirror every day an ordeal. After an accident, permanent damage is visible on the skin. After extensive sunbathing, large areas of pigmentation can be seen on the face. If you regard such skin irregularities as blemishes, you as a patient are probably only looking for one thing: relief. You finally want to leave the house again without heavy make-up. You long for the radiantly smooth and clear skin of a young person. In this situation, a visit to the doctor is advisable. He or she will recommend dermabrasion to make your complexion radiantly beautiful again.

What is dermabrasion?

During dermabrasion, the doctor removes the top layer of skin. It is a surgical procedure in the field of aesthetic medicine. Your doctor will recommend removing the top layer of skin if the skin appears blemished. Common reasons include visible acne scars, deep wrinkles or age spots. They look unattractive and are often a serious psychological burden for those affected. Your doctor can remedy the situation with dermabrasion. It makes visible scars disappear and existing calluses appear flatter.

When is dermabrasion used?

Dermabrasion is suitable for men and women regardless of age. Even very young patients benefit from the abrasion of the upper skin layer if severe scars are visible after acne has healed. Older people can also benefit from skin treatment. Although it heals more slowly after the procedure, lasting visible results can still be achieved.

However, dermabrasion is not recommended in individual cases. For example, if you have very dark skin, it may be permanently discolored or appear blotchy after the procedure. The treatment is also not recommended for allergy sufferers. In an active acne phase, your surgeon will advise against the procedure to avoid inflammation. After a severe sunburn or a chemical peel, you should allow some time to pass before having the treatment carried out.

Dermabrasion is used, for example, for

  • scarred skin after severe acne or scars caused by accidents.
  • Scars caused by accidents.
  • sun-induced spots on the face, hands and arms
  • inelastic skin due to strong exposure to light
  • benign tumors of the sweat glands or sebaceous glands on the nose

How does dermabrasion work?

During dermabrasion, the top layer of skin is mechanically removed using a small wheel. This wheel is moved over the skin at high speed. In this way, the doctor abrades irregularities on the surface of the skin. It improves the appearance of the damaged top layer of skin. Dermabrasion is used on small areas of skin, but can also be applied to the entire face.

In combination with other facial treatments such as a tightening or scar removal, a new layer of skin is revealed. It appears much finer, smoother, more youthful and plumper than the old layer.

Whether your doctor simply performs dermabrasion on you or uses it in conjunction with additional measures such as a chemical peel depends on the indication and the condition of your skin. In most cases, even deep scars or large areas of unevenness can be reduced if an experienced doctor uses the appropriate method or a combination of methods.

How does the treatment work?

The specialist will perform your dermabrasion in several steps. There are a few factors to consider before the treatment: you should refrain from taking ASA, sleeping pills or alcohol for about a week. Taking ASA in particular delays blood clotting and may interfere with wound healing. Smokers should severely restrict their nicotine consumption four weeks before the procedure. If you are having dermabrasion performed on your lips, it is important to clarify whether you are prone to herpes simplex or whether you already have an infection. In this case, it is better to wait a few days before treatment until the herpes has healed.

You should cleanse your skin thoroughly immediately before treatment and not apply any make-up. Before the operation, the main area is cleaned with an antiseptic agent. The local anesthetic is then applied. Grinding is done with a free diamond cutter or a wire brush. The whole procedure takes between a few minutes and an hour, depending on the size of the skin area.

After the treatment, the area is covered with a wound dressing. The skin should now be red and sensitive. Your doctor will probably recommend a specific cream for your main care. Swelling, tingling or burning of the main area is also possible. If necessary, your doctor will prescribe medication to provide rapid relief. It is important that you do not expose the new layer of skin to direct sunlight for the first three months. If you follow your doctor's recommendations, you will enjoy your new skin once the redness has subsided, which will make you look visibly younger and more radiant.
